Conroe vs. Wolfdale

Next week I'm going to have Egg send me a couple of Core 2's for the wife and I. I've desided on the 3GHz version. My thoughts are Wolfdale because it's cheaper. But what is it that sets the 2 apart other than the die size and L2? Also what makes the E6850 "worth" the etra $ over the cost of the E8400?

The E8400 is by far a better chip, the only reason the E6850 costs more is because they are harder to find since they are an older chip.

cooling: e8400 runs cooler

I think that about sums it up. Performance sometimes its only a little bit faster, but all the other categories the e8400 really shines compared to the e6850.

Yeah most of those differences are due to the 45nm process, but the performance improvements come from the revisions they made to the architecture/instruction set that give the 45nm a little boost over the 65nm parts.

YUP!!!
I'm new to it but am having fun trying. The mobo that I've have now (for the past couple of months) is the first I can do any oc'ing with. I was hoping for higher with the PD 830, but I had a hard time keeping the temp under control with Ortho. I would like to see the 4GHz out of the E8400 that I keep hearing about.

You can tell by the number alone.... 8400 is bigger than 6850 =)






In all honesty though, you want the Wolfdale. The E8400 is probably the best buy right now, regardless of whether or not you're going to overclock... not to mention that it's superior to the E6850 in every category.
