Conroe Temps. Should I be concerned?

Decided after 3 days burn in, I'd turn up the wick on my rig:
Gear:
Asus P5B Deluxe
Conroe 6600
2 Gigs G. Skill PC-6400
Zalman CNP-9500 cooler
X1900XTX
76 Gig Raptor
PC Power & Cooling 610 watt PSU.

Bumped the bus to 333 @ 1:1 so the 2.4 now runs at 2996 a core.
Default Voltage on the CPU, 2.1 on the RAM.

Stock Idle temps according to the Intel TAT are 44/46 a core
OC'd to 2996 is 52/54 idle

Fired up Orthos and after 3 minutes my cores were at 70 a piece! I shut it down at that point, and decided to post here. No idea if it would have stabilized, but I couldn;t take the chance.

I don't think this is normal. I used the Zalman paste that came with the cooler, and a dab of AS3 as well. I have AS5, but it was at home and I built the rig at work.

Is 70 a core smoking? It worries me that this occurred at stock CPU voltage as well. The case is a Coolermaster with 2 80's intake in front. The Zalman blows out the case, and I put an 80mm Vantec Stealth for exhaust. It sits pretty much right in line with the Zalman so I assumed it would help pull the heat right off.

Maybe I didn't seat it right? I planned on going back to watercooling next month, and this just seems to be pushing me to do it this week instead.

Any ideas? Is the Intel Program accurate for core temps?

Thanks gang. Just don't want to fry this thing.

The stock cooler SUCKS, but being on stock voltage (lets assume 1.325V) you should be doing better then that. Reseat the heatsink and use AS5, dont mix compounds! post back your results.

I think that "default" voltage might be your problem. For a measley 3GHz overclock, my DS3 decided my E6600 needed an entire 1.41v. I'd drop the voltage to 1.325, or 1.35 to be safe. Your overclock should still go on without a hitch, but temps will drop. Make sure your case fans are configured to take advantage of the 9500's thermal structure, I.E., it should be exhausting straight out your rear case fan.
Also, I'd reseat the 9500 with AS5 ONLY, and make sure you don't use too much. I'd say a half a grain of rice at most. You want to form the thinnest layer possible that will still transmit heat. Too much will actually insulate the chip and trap heat on it, which is what you might have done.
EDIT: Jeez. This is like... THE definitive post on C2D temps. :p

Yanked the Zalman out and cleaned her off. Reapplied AS5, and this time I cranked the screws down until I almost stripped them. You can still rotate the cooler with your hand, but it's as tight as it's going to go.

After 3 minutes of Orthos (just like before), here's my results:
Conroetemps1.png

a 7 degree drop! Idle dropped into the 45/47 range instead of 52/54 per core. So are THESE temps a little more acceptable running at 3 Gigs?

I'm still going water next month :D

They're better, but go into your BIOS and make sure you're not giving it too much voltage. Turn your fans up, too. I'm using the exact same setup and I'm idling around 37C.

CPU Vcore is stock, so no overvoltage happening.
Fans are max in BIOS at all times (disabled Asus monitoring).

The stock fan on the Zalman only runs at 2600 rpms, and my Vantec stealth helping it exit the rear is only 2500. I may try a more powerful exhaust 80mm than the stealth. Looking for a reason to go back to water though :D

Jeez. What are your ambient temps? You really could be getting cooler temps. Also, how much AS5 did you use when you reseated?

My thoughts exactly. Maybe my Coolermaster case doesn't move air as well as my Lian-Li PC656 did. I also have an X1900XTX toasting away at 52c at idle. When I reseated I did a thin layer on the entire IHS. I can still rotate the cooler on top of teh CPU though, even with teh screws cranked down to the absolute point of stripping. I might need more airflow, but again, I planned on going back to water so I might as well start preparing for it. I like my idles in the high 30's, load in the 40's. H20 for the win. ;)

Heh, yeah. Watercooling is great. Be aware that the C2Ds have notoriously bad IHSes, though, so you may need to lap yours to get a smooth mating surface with your waterblock.

I would recommend NOT using that program to monitor your temps. It recorded the temps on my AMD system 10C above what they were being reported as by every other program i was using.

Use Everest Ultimate edition, i get accurate temps with that program.
