Well i have decided that i am going to update my Main Gaming Rig this Fall (see sig) to a new Conroe Rig. My Main question is about the E6400 and the E6600. The Cache difference. Has anyone seen a major differcen between these 2 chips in the cache? Will i see a major difference between the 2 chips. Of course i am going to OC to chip with my Water Cooling Kit. I am sure i am going to have change blocks but thats no problem.I do a lot of encoding and gaming with my rig and i want to know which chip will i like better. There is a nice price difference and if i will not notice the difference in the 6400 i will go with that, but than again.......... I am not sure what board i am going to get yet, but i am going to get 2GB of DDR2800, and not sure on video yet. I play a lot of games and so far my SLi setup has been nice but i am thinking of going with the X1950 when it comes out. So what are your thoughts on the 2 chips? Is the E6600 worth the difference?

Cache only makes a difference in certain applications, but if it were me, I'd grab the processor with the 4MB cache, and then overclock to make up the difference.

I think maybe you meant 2MB.

Why dont you search through all the million Conroe posts and tell me how long it took you find the answer. Dont have anything constructive to post .........dont post @ all. :p

It makes a difference in some apps, but it could make a big difference in future apps and Vista not to mention DX10 games. If you dont plan on upgrading any time soon Id say get the 6600.

thanks for telling him what i was thinking. Well i be gaming for awhile, i I do some work stuff on this rig, RPD which is nothing, but mostly game, wow, farcry, oblivion, ect. With gaming in mind, will i see a major difference?

From what I have read it will me small....maybe 10% on some games that are out now, but like I said earlier if you will be keeping the chip for a while I would go 6600.

yeah after this build i dont want to upgrade till i have to (DX10) which i may wait for, i think it'll be easier to build new system now and than just buy a Dx10 card and sell the other

I would get the 6600 then and just upgrade the video card. With future GPU's 6400 might actually be a bottleneck.

What i was thinking, well over the weekend i rebuilt the g/f's pc with a new case from a friend and added her another 200GB hd, giving her over 600GB now, lets hope she dont fill this one too soon :p We are currently looking at houses, i think once we find a house and get moved i will start the pc upgrade. thinking around october, not sure yet though. It's kinda low on the list right now :p Buying house at the top :D
