I have read a lot of stuff indicating that I should be able to O/C my E6400 to 2.8 or so on air.

I have an Asus SS cooler and an intel D975XBX mb... I have taken the thing up to a 15% o/c (2.45GHZ) and it was able to successfully complete a benchmark. How much higher do you think that I can push on stock voltages? I have not modded the board which means I dont have access to the vcore. Can I push this higher without changing the vcore or the ram voltage?

Thoughts anyone?

All the way to 2.8 you think or higher...

Well not sure what your other components are but your processor is probably good into the 3ghz+ range. I know not all c2d are hitting that, it definitely depends on your setup, but i think a lot of the lower overclocks may be shitty mobos and people not wanting to push it / not knowing what they are doing. That said i dont have a c2d so i could just be full of shit
;)

the best place to go for any high overclocks is xtremesystems.org the guys there know what they are doing.

what memory is in your rig? depending on how it performs, you may or may not need to change memory ratios in order to high a nice high FSB to get 2.8ghz out of that chip.. though, why set such a random goal? aim for the highest mhz you can.

be sure to keep two things in mind:
1. try to avoid booting at speeds that you don't know are stable. easy to mess up windows. overclock in windows from a known stable oc'ed point :D
2. patience along with a lot of trial and error is key to overclocking. if you run into trouble and can't boot, try holding down insert when turning on or restting the system. if all else fails, clear the bios and start from where you were before :p

Wow, after all this time I had no idea... That's great advice, thanks :).

And as Eclipse said, it depends on how your RAM can perform. Course, running a divider I bet you could get your CPU to 2.8 or even higher (lucky bastard btw).

Thanks for all the suggestions!

To this point, I have not found a stable O/C tool to work with this board in windows so I am in and out of bios. I dont have anything on the machine (brand new) so if I mess up windows its no big deal.

I have Corsair XMS 667 DDR2 in the box. Should be pretty good ram for doing an O/C, but I did find that at a 20% O/C the machine wouldnt always boot. I changed my divider (not really a divider just a selector on this board - 667/533/etc) to run the ram at 533 (1/2 I believe) and was able to run the O/C to 25% (2.667GHZ) and the thing ran just fine - ram at this speed is running @ 667 so no problems there.

Later I decided to jump the thing to 30% O/C which would be a FSB of 1387, ram @ 693, and the CPU at 2.75. It wouldnt boot until I raised the ram voltage to 1.9v. Then no problems.

I probably wont push too much farther right now as the machine screams anyway and I dont feel like the MB sensors report to windows very well with the tools I have found to this point. Even the Intel delivered monitoring program doesnt recognize the Core2Duo processor.

But you never know... probably will work on overclocking the vid card a little. Its a BFG 7900GT running at 475. I know other companies are delivering this same card clocked over 550. Im probably better off seeing if I can get a 10% O/C out of my vid card and then running the whole system somewhere between 2.6 and 2.8 with the vid overclocked.

Thanks for all your help!
