computer wont start after failed overclock

on my q6600 with a p5q pro i tried

x9 multi
400fsb
400 fsb strap to nb
5-5-5-15 1066 ram (thats what its rated at)
2.1V ram (also what its rated at)
1.6V core
1.26V nb (highest it would go without turning yellow)

ive booted it before a few times at 9x400, and also a few times at 1.6V. its on water so temps havent been too high. i have it set to auto shutoff at 75C. this time i tried that strap ram to fsb or whatever its called which i havent tried before and now it wont start up again. after failed overclock attempts before it would just restart or i might have to turn it off for 30 seconds for it to reset. now i turned off the psu even for a minute or so and it still wont start. can someone describe this "fsb strap to nb" thing to me and possibly help me restart my computer? i hope i didnt kill anything.
 
If you have a particularity bad OC attempt, often you'll have to reset the BIOS. You can either do the pin method or just physically remove the battery, but they both accomplish the same task. I can't count the number of times I've had to do this over the years.
 
damn i was afraid of that. not as afraid as of my board dying, but still afraid. im running my computer in a way that the motherboard isnt very easily accessible. :/ i cant wait til i can afford a nice new rig with a clear cmos button. :)

anyway, can someone still explain this "fsb strap to nb" for me? what it does, what i should set it at, etc? i think that this setting is the reason why it failed so hard. maybe i should ask in the p5q thread...
 
i just google for "fsb strap to nb" there are a lot of forum threads describing it. I think it has to do with built in memory timings of the FSB, i know i had to read it a few times and still wasn't clear to me.

As long as you have a paper clip and a way to open your case, it shouldn't be too hard to reset your BIOS - just jump those two pins (or use a Gigabyte motherboard :)).

FSB strap, if I remember correctly, defines how loosely timed (correct term?) the north bridge is. Going to higher strappings generally allows you to overclock the FSB and RAM higher. Usually there are ratings of 200, 266, 333, and 400, with 200 being the tightest (high performance, but more stressful) and 400 being the loosest (less performance, but you can reach higher clocks).

Also, 1.6V is really too much voltage for a Q6600, are you using a G0 revision or a B3 revision? Also, try running 450x8 instead of 400x900; I've generally found it to put less stress on the CPU, thereby allowing lower Vcore.

yeah i just had to pull it out and move the jumper. took me all of 15 seconds. :rolleyes: thanks for the tip about using 8x multiplier. ill try that. right now i got it stable at 9x400 using 1.525V, but no reason i cant try to lower my vcore or maybe eek a little higher clock out of it right? its under water so temps are fine. prime95 stable never exceeding 75C with HT on.
