Computer won't come out of screen saver

Ok - this has been happening quite a bit -

I have WinXP SP2.

I have the screen saver set to turn on after 5 minutes. Sometimes I use My Picture Slide Show and most recently I changed it to Blank Screen. It doesn't matter.
The monitor is set to shut off after 1 hour.
The hard drive is set to never shut off.
The computer is set to never shutdown or hibernate.

Yet, sometimes, after sitting for a while, I can come back to the computer, attempt to move the mouse to get back to the desktop (and deactivate the screen saver) but nothing happens.

I can press anything on the keyboard, roll the mouse, press the mouse buttons but nothing.

The only way to get it back is to do a hard shutdown and reboot.

Is there a simple fix that I am missing?
 
What if you eliminate some variables. Try disabling the monitor inactivity shut off and keep the screen saver enabled or vice versa.
 
Here is what I did overnight - I turned OFF the screensaver and let the computer remain on overnight. (I turned the monitor off)

This morning, I turned the monitor back on, wiggled the mouse and it came to life right away.
So - seems like the Screen Saver is the issue but why? I dont know.
