Computer upgrade question

I am currently getting quite a bit of frame lag in Overwatch and thinking of upgrading my computer. I have the game on low graphics settings. It seems that I am having to restart my computer every 2 days or so to stop some of the frame lag.

I am currently running an i5 4670k stock speed with 8 gigs gskill 1333 MHz memory (4gigs x 2 sticks)

I am running a 6950 radeon and my resolution is 1080p.

Asus Z87 pro LGA 1150 socket

windows 7 64 bit

I know upgrading my videocard will see the biggest boost. I am thinking of getting the 1080 or 1070 (I know some will say overkill for 1080p). I'm wondering about upgrading my ram as well. With my current cpu/socket, what would be my best option on ram and how big of increase might I see on the ram alone? I believe I remember reading that ram speed does not matter as much with this socket/cpu. Would I be better off just buying 2 more 4 gig sticks that would not match mine? Would it be better to go 4x4 all matching? Would higher speed ram help me much? Is 2 sticks of 8 each preferable to using all 4 slots? I am considering just upgrading from the 8 to 16 gigs.

Thanks in advance!

Don't waste money on higher clocked RAM for that platform. Unless the prices are the same you'll be fine with 1333 or 1600.

A possible quick fix for the meantime: i get random frame lag in overwatch from time to time and it's fixed by changing from borderless window -> fullscreen and back

I believe there was like a $5 to $10 difference between 16GB of DDR3 1600 and DDR3 2133.

I haven't checked DDR3 prices in a while so I wasn't sure the price difference. $10 might be a little too much, but a $5 difference isn't. He will literally not see any difference what-so-ever. In fact, unless he goes into the BIOS manually and sets the frequency higher it will default to DDR3 1600 anyway.

Could come in handy if he overclocks....but ill also add theirs no guaranty the system would be stable at the higher ram speed....i would spend an extra 5 as well. My ram is slightly overclocked lol

Overclocking the CPU gives a hell of a lot more performance increase than the RAM. CPU overclocks aren't limited by RAM speed.

OC your CPU and buy an 8x2 set of 1600 while it's still cheap.

For the record I've populated all four dimms without any issue.
