Hello all,

I am new to the boards, so please bare with me as I break into this. I am a CSI student, and I work with visual studio 2005(soon to be 2008) DreamWeaver and Photoshop CS3 for hours each day. Unfortunately, the computer I have is incredibly slow, and I would like to know how much of a difference in speed I should see in this programs over my current setup:

I currently have an old dell m60 laptop, 1.70 ghz cpu, 1 GB ram.

I have $2500 to spend, including a monitor(I want a nice 24" LCD). I am thinking going to the q6600 or the new q9450 when it is released, as I will have the money at the end of January from financial aid, and 4 GB's of ram.

I am sure there will be a great improvement in speed, but is there any way to quantify the improvement? 1000%? With my current laptop, I only get about 30FPS while playing World of Warcraft, and most of the time less then 20FPS.

Again, I am sorry if I did not post this correctly in the right forum or whatnot.

CS3 has GPU acceleration, does it not?

A 1.7GHz laptop probably makes it... a CeleronM? Centrino?

A desktop will most definitely be faster... how much faster? Fast enough for you to want to chuck the laptop out a window (not yours). Quantitatively? No idea. 2 or 3 times as fast? Less? More?
 
GPU matters. A lot. With a 24" your ideal is going to be 8800 GTXs in SLI, but you could get away with 8800 GTs in SLI or Radeon 3870's in crossfire. Assuming you're willing to drop some settings and are playing little more than WoW. That's a lot of pixels to push, and you don't want to game at anything but native res on an LCD.

As for improvement, in what you do likely 3-4x.
