I was 90% done in formatting a 250 gig partition on my new 320 gig hard drive. (50 gigs for the Windows install partition, the remaining for everything else).

I got to 90% and Windows Update decided it was in it's best interest to restart the machine. When it all came back up Windows Disk Management said that the 250 gig partition was "Healthy" and it was all available for use. I tried re-formatting the partition, deleting the partion, and the recreating a new partition, and each time it just comes right back saying everything is okay. It doesnt take another hour or so to format it and it tells me that it's all ready for use.

Should I be worried? Is there some kind of tool I can use to really check to see if all the space is actually there and ready for use?

Please elaborate. Are you saying you are able to delete the partition?
If yes then simply delete it, recreate it and run checkdisk with the check empty space ticked.
If not, try using a partition manager in dos (Parition Magic) to delete and recreate the partition, then run a checkdisk with check empty space ticked.
If that also fails, get the Maxtor powermax tools and low level format the drive. You will loose ALL the information on the drive but atleast you are restarting fresh.

I would recommend the 3rd option if you cannot delete the partition.

I was able to delete the partition and put it back to being unallocated space under the Windows disk management panel. When I clicked on it again to format it it just popped back up as being healthy, it didn't sit there and take an hour to format like it was the first time. So I deleted it again and did a create new partition using a quick format and the same thing happened. I was expecting it to take another hour like the first initial time.

I'll try the chkdsk thing tonight.
