Hi. I am currently running an e-cube eg65 SFF system. I have a 2.8ghz p4(prescott .9u 1mb L2 cache), 2x512mb pc3200 corsair value RAM, BFG Geforce FX 5700 ultra, 120gig ata/100 WD hard drive, benq DVD+RW drive, 220watt autosense power suply.
I self modded it with a drill press by making many holes over top of the video card side in the clear acrylic side panel and on the other side panel, I cut a hole and installed a 120mm clear blue LED fan(harder than it sounds -_-) for excellent air flow. I have a PCI 2x80mm fan card pushing air from the one side of the PC (where the video card is) to the other side, where the 120mm fan is. I have a 2 40mm fan set HD cooler. I use an exhaust pipe from the heatsink that has the heatsink fan blow the air directly out of the case, purchased from the manufactorers of my case. And finally the 120mm blue fan on the other side.
Now that you know about my PC, I'll begin to describe the problem. My computer freezes completely randomly and unpredictably. For some reason though, it never used to freeze while I was playing any games (as I have in my current set up, listed), so I didn't care too much about it, and it didn't happen very frequently unless I hit the table by my computer really hard, then it would freeze, but now I live in constant fear of the freeze, even now, while I'm typing this problem >_<. It froze on me during a counter strike match, then later the next day during a WIII game, and in CS a few more times the next day. It seems to have calmed down on freezing in games, but it still quite frequently freezes while I am in basic windows. If I let my computer boot and sit in the OS screen, touching nothing, about 1/3 times before it goes to idle, it completely locks up. While I am just casually browsing the internet or talking to people on AIM/IRC it also tends to jsut freeze a lot. When I say locks up, nothing responds, ctrl alt delete doesn't do anything, the keyboard gives no input, the mouse neither. I can still open my CD drive and put in a CD and the green light that it shows when it is loading still flickers. The hard drive lights up as usual as well, as though nothing went wrong and its just the monitor's fault, however it isn't, because if I have music playing at the time, it freezes too. When I hard restart from this position, I find that occasionally when it reboots, the hard drive light will remain on indefinitely and the monitor will never initialize (light doesn't turn green -_-). Sometimes when bios boots, my 2.8ghz pentium will come up as a 1.86ghz pentium or a 8.0ghz celeron and show likewise when I right click my computer and go to properties. Sometimes when it boots like this it will tell me that the CPU frequency or something has been changed and to enter bios, so I do, immidiately hit F10 save changes, and it restarts and works fine. Once, recently, when I restarted, it started to go in to bios, but then threw a bunch of crazy colors up on my monitor.
Basically, what to remember, if you dont want to read anything else is: when I used to slam my desk my PC would freeze, it didn't usually freeze during video games, it most commonly freezes during regular IE/AIM activities, recently I noticed that my GPU core was only 300mhz, so I picked 'auto-overclock' and it put it to the proper 475mhz (though I dont think this really effected much), freezing is unpredictable, and during reboot from a freeze, my CPU settings are occasionally crazy.
The reason I posted it here was because I'm hoping that the cause of this is my graphics card. I have a lifetime warrantee on it and plan to replace it soon anyway. Also the fact that the computer seems normal, except that the screen is frozen could attribute to the gfx card malfunctioning. It was also at a 300mhz core, when it should have been 475, though I found that out and fixed it rather recently. The random screen of colors during the one boot was also prolly the gfx card. However, there is no reason for it to mess w/ my cpu settings, and when a gfx card malfunctions, the PC shouldn't stop playing music. I dont know exactly what is going on anymore, but I would appreciate any help. ty
