computer problem has me stumped

OK i'll be damned if i can work out what is wrong with my rig.

Issues started the other day after i had transferrred everything to a new case and PSU. I got some random crashes which have got progressively worse, now if it crashes it won't even BSOD it just locks up completely.

When i switch it one there is only a 1 in 3 chance of it actually booting to the windows splash screen. So far i have tried reseting the mild over clock to stock, different ram, different Gfx card, checked the primary HDD for errors, updated the BIOS to the latest version and disconnected everything but the primary hard drive,i was in the process of deleting all the drivers and running driver sweeper but the machine won't even boot into safe mode. When i could get into windows i thought it was a windows error and I was contemplating doing that but i can't even get to that stage now.

Does anyone have any idea WTF is wrong with my rig and how to fix it?
specs are x6 1090T @stock, 2Gb corsair XMS2, Asus M4N82 M/B, Asus 460GTX, WD 320gb HDD, Corsair HX 1000

try it with a linux live cd (boot's linux of cdrom), if it locks there, it's hardware, if not, might try either a fresh install of windows's to a different hard drive

hmm, does it spin up when you push the power button?

try it with the motherboard out of the case, sitting on something that won't conduct electricity.

Do you have a different video card you can try? Maybe try it with two video cards installed as well. (and with the video in different slots).. there's some weird gtx460 issue with some mobo's with the number of available lanes (well, that's what some folks say, i can't confirm it)

Only if its booting from cold, and by cold i mean switched off at the power supply - not the case switch. If it crashes or i shut down and restart it won't boot - i have to switch it off at the PSU and wait 10 minutes.

Next step will be another known working video card - my spare 8800gt is artifacting so i'm guessing thats on its last legs as well.

This 460 has worked in this m/b before and the m/b has 2 x16 and 1 x8 slot so i don't think lanes are an issue.

Well i thought i was onto something. Whilst waiting to reboot the machine i changed the ram into the other bank of dimm slots and removed all the front panel connectors from the m/b, I managed to get the machine to reboot several times and reinstall all the drivers. Just tried a couple of websites though and bang - hard crash and it won't reboot. Its beginning to look to me that its either the PSU or more likely the M/B??

Further update, have tried a different video card and a different PSU with no joy, currently going to try out of the case to see if we get anywhere with that.
