Okay, I've finally given up and I'm asking you guys. I recently bought a Burner and 512 stick of ram (333mhz) and installed them. Shortly therafter my computer did a wierd freeze when my computer screen went all garbeld. Now after I rebooted I froze again and had to reboot and the next thing I know I was getten errors saying "Can't find proper bootable drive" and a blue screen saying "Unmountable_Boot_Volume". I tried reinstalling windows xp pro and found that my c: partition had been completly wiped while my e: partition with 70 gigs of info was still good. Well either way I deleated both and tried reinstallen XP to no avail as it would freeze at various times between install. So I tried putting on windows 98 and the same thing happend, cept at one point I did manage to get it on with the help of a friend but the fucker was missing an assload of drivers for the internet. I tried to upgrade from 98 to xp and it'd freeze. Went back and tried to a fresh install and STILL the sumbitch would freeze. Now I can't even get the fucken CD's to boot past "Starting windows setup".

At this point I've tried switching my ram between the 512 stick and the 256 stick to both. Hasn't worked. I tried putting my bio's to default and resetting the cmos battery or w.e the fuck it is. That didn't work. Tried different hard drives, even went out an hour ago and picked up a new 80 gig hd and STILL NOTHING. So I was wondering if it was a mobo issiue but still I got the IT people down at PrimeTime computers where I pick my shit up to bring it in. I don't have the money for 70$'s an hour so could you all help me cause they said they doubt it's a problem with that. Thanks guys!
 
I know you have tried swapping the ram out but have you tried running memtest98+ on it? Disconnect everything and put only one stick in at a time. Its rare but not unheard of a bad stick causing a perfectly good one to go bad.
 
it might be overheating - try reseating CPU HSF.. also check whether the fan on the vid card is working.. and try other PSU as Gruntled Employee suggested..
 
Well, you bought a new CD-Burner and a stick of RAM. After that, you're computer is FUBAR. You already removed the RAM and replaced it with good, known working RAM, correct? If that is so, then remove the CD-Burner and try again. I know it sounds weird, but that is the only other thing you changed before the computer went FUBAR on you, so I'd try that. Try disconnecting all but the system drive and the CD-ROM you had before.
 
this is stupid, but have you looked at your windows xp cd? maybe its scratched up.

what are the computer specs?
 
Some burners suck unless they are a master on their own channel. Is your burner on the same cable as your HD. IF so is it set as slave?

Yep, try disconecting the drive completely. ;)
 
Some questions: Is your burner on the same IDE channel as your hard drive? (are the connected to the same strip).

If they are (or if you did), did you check the jumper settings on both drives? Generally, it's better for the burner to be on its own strip (as a master), but if they were on the same strip, the hard drive should be the master and the burner the slave.

IF they were both set to MASTER, then you ruined your boot section (I did this once) and is why your OS got all fubared. If you haven't change anything, this is also why you can't reinstall anything. Pull them out, and change the burner to slave if you haven't done so already, or leave it as a master, but put it on it's own IDE channel. After doing so, a format and reinstall of the OS should fix everything.

Otherwise, it's a RAM problem...like everyone else said above.

Good point. I had a new cd-rom that I thought was COMPLETELY junk untill I finally realized It was only having trouble reading my own BURNED discs, NOT originals( I guess that makes it only HALF junk;) ).
BTW: I hope its not a burned XP disc:eek:

sounds like a ram problem, same exact happened to me with my old pc when one of my 512's was bad
it could be the drive jumpers, but i've never had such serious problems with wrong jumper settings, it simply wouldn't pick up the drive or it would lock when detecting ide
i'd put my money on a ram related problem
