Computer DEAD..need help ASAP

I'm working on a friend's comp that is a 1.1 ghz duron, an MSI MS-6378 motherboard, and 128 MB SDRAM. Apparently, the thing was just cobbled together and built negligently, as there were NO fans in the case. The machine also has a 52X CD drive, 16X CDRW, and a WD60BB hard drive. I've tried different combinations of RAM to see if a stick of RAM was bad to no avail. When it attempts to boot, it gets to the XP pro loading screen, then the cursor disappear and the monitor goes black. I originally thought it was a problem with the integrated graphics, but I tried a PCI video card and the same thing happened. Anyone else think it is a dead board? Also, the board wouldn't even recognize my PS2 keyboard, only a USB one. There was also a thick layer of dust covering the capacitators and MOSFETs to where I couldn't even tell what the color of the board was. IMO, the thing got dusty, didn't have adequate cooling, so it ran extremely hot and died gradually.

6378's....i remember those, hmm i can't recall any specific issues with the boards so my best guess would be that you're correct about it just gradually giving up after being treated badly.

actually scratch that, i'm gonna go ahead and say this is purely a software issue, get some fans in the system and try to install windows on a different drive in the system.

have you tried safemode? have you tried removing all pci cards ? (i believe the board has pretty much everything you need onboard anyways. i'd recommend memtest but it really doesnt sound like a memory error.
 
This could be a hardware OR software issue.


I'd totally clean the computer out, possibly even re-do the cpu's thermal paste, since it probably has all been baked off in the heat, and then re-seat all system connections. Throw an extra fan or two into the case while I was at it.

Then I'd try to format and try to re-set up the sucker.

Beyond that, start disconnecting and/or swapping parts till you find the bad one. Could be almost anything: power supply, cpu, ram, motherboard... anything.


Its possible it was overheating, and locking up... and that corrupted core system files. Until you troubleshoot, we can only guess.
 
The monitor goes black before I'm able to get into safe mode. All PCI cards have been removed. It still occurs regardless. The only other thing I can think of possibly dying would be the hard drive, and it was working just fine about 3 hours ago. The onboard sound was flaky when I got it here last night. It won't recognize the PS2 keyboards. Then the integrated video seemed to crap out. Then the whole damn system went.

The case will only accept a 60MM fan (it is mATX). And I don't have any of those. The best thing I could do would to be to stick a desk fan beside of it.
 
anything to keep it cool, how bout you download something like knoppix and try to boot that? its an os that runs off a cd...so you can kind of test it with different software without formatting.... www.knoppix.org i think.
