Okay, here's the deal.....

I had my comp on, went out to do some late night work and came back to find the pc shutdown. I tried several times to turn it back on, all to no avail. It smelled like the psu went kaput so I went and bought a new psu (600w).

Now the thing would turn on, but nothing else would happen....I could hear the drives spinning, saw the cpu and system fans running, but the monitor would never show the boot screen and XP.

For the hell of it, I took out all the cards, disconnected the hard drives and tried to boot. No beeps, no nothing.

Next I took out the memory sticks. At this point the only thing left plugged in to the mobo is the CPU/heatstink/fan and the system fan.

Still no beeps.

Finally, I took out the CPU/heatsink.....no beeps. I did notice that the cpu looked VERY nasty...having crusty thermal paste and shit all over it. I cleaned it up as best I could for when I put it back in.

At this point I'm thinking the mobo is fried so I go out and get a new one. I come back home, install just the mobo (no cpu, no memory, etc) and don't get any beeps. WTF? I've got everything installed now with the new mobo and while I am getting power now, there's still no forward movement.

I would normally think it's the CPU but the problem with THAT is that I didn't get any beeps when only the mobo was powered.

What do you guys recommend? Any/all help is appreciated.
 
Did you smell burning? My MoBo fried once, a power regulator popped and started spewing smoke. I RMA'd the board to Abit and they sent me a brand new one. Nothing else you can do besides RMA the board, or get a new one. Everything else seems to be in working order, but be safe. A MoBo shortage can take other parts with it.

Whoops, missed an important part. Yeah, I'd say that your old MoBo fried and took some parts with it. Even with the new MoBo running, it seems that an important part has been fried.
 
Well, what's killing me is that I got a new board, installed it with the old cpu/heatsink and NOTHING else no hdd, fdd, dvd, etc) and STILL didn't get any beeps.

It's an award bios, so I would think at minimum I should get some kind of a beep but I'm getting NOTHING.

I even took out the CPU/hs so now the only thing powered is the mobo and I'm getting NOTHING.

At this point I'm wondering if it's one of the following things:

1) my case speaker is fried and I'm actually GETTING beeps but not hearing them
2) my cpu is fried
3) I bought a bad mobo

This is just killing me. Unfortunatley Microcenter isn't open right now so I can't go there and swap the mobo or by a new system speaker or by a new cpu....

If anyone else has any thoughts, ideas ,etc, I would REALLY appreciate it.

I can think of two other possibilites. You could have bad RAM. Or if your not using integrated video, it could be a bad video card. Replace the RAM with a known working stick and see.
 
I acutally tried to POST without any RAM in it and still didn't get anything. Weird as hell.....
 
Motherboards won't beep without a working CPU. The beep codes come after the CPU test. You'd have to have a POST diagnostic card if you wanted to test the motherboard.

Your chip is probably fried as well.
