i just got home, and when i turned on my computer monitor i noticed my comp had been restarted. nobody could of done this because nobody was home. so it just must of restarted by itslelf. this is the first time it has happend. the only thing i could think is the psu, i dont know what else would cause a comp to restart. this computer is under warrenty. should i wait for it to do it again, or should i just call dell and get a new psu right away. what would u do. they just sent my 3 new hardrives 2 weeks ago because one of them where having problems and they coullnt figure out wich hardrive  . also my hardrive always makes a little high pitched noise, and this noise has gotten just a little louder this past week.

A momentary power outage, or heavy line-voltage fluctuation can restart your computer.

yah, i guess i just wait to see if it does it again. is it normal for a power supply to have a slight high pitched noise though?

It was could have been a quick power outage or a brownout. You may want to make sure that you are not taxing out the PSU. I would say wait and see if it does it again before going thru the hassel of calling Dell support. As far as the noise, the first thing I would do is get some compressed air and make sure that it is clean and unobstructed.

Im going to run Prime 95 for like 7-8 hours while im gone at work. ill do the torture test that test max power and heat and stuff like that. Thatll put my PSU under some heavy load for a long time. If it doesnt fail or restart in 8 hours do u guys think it isnt my psu?

i didnt get to run it for 8 hours but for 4 in a half. no errors no restarts, it was still running perfectly. does this mean it probably isnt my PSU because i did the max power consumption test?

It ran for 4 and 1/2 and then reset? If not you may be ok, just monitor it for a few days. There is still a very good chance that it reset due to a brownout or something like that.

oops, i meant i got home from work early and didnt want to run it for 4 more hours. so i just stopped the test, and in that whole time i was running the test there where no errors or restarts at all :D Maybe i should get a UPS, then if it was a brownout it would of just stayed on :D

well i dont have a UPS but i do have a good surge protector that can handle about 3000joules. i dont think its a driver issue either because i didnt put any new sofware or new drivers in. It just happend. the only drivers i upgraded to where the catlyst 4.10's.

that is relative, with a great number of variables, unless you spent more than many a UPS that is an MOV (Metal-Oxide Varistor) based surge protector
and they will eventually wear out, often while still appearing to be functional

see the power conditioning link above
and
http://www.brickwall.com/

some of the variables that can effect its longevity
how "clean" your power is locally, the age of the protector
the quality of the MOV components

most of those are hard to actually determine

yah im not sure how "clean" my power is locally. but my surge protector is about 4 months old and i paid $80 for it back then.

it very likely is doing its job still in that event
likely a fairly high quality unit, and not all that old
but read up on MOVs they are very handy devices, and cheap
almost every surge suppressor on the market employs them
considering the price it might even turn off that LED when it eventually dies :p

a line interactive UPS though is likely a better long term choice for you ;)

thanxs for your help Ice Czar, ill probably get a UPS within the next month, because i care about my baby(my computer) :D Are there any UPS's you could recommend me, there are so many out there, its hard to choose between all of them.
edit: and sorry for the bad grammer on my first post, i was tired and had just come home from work and was worrying why my computer was restarted :D but i fixed all the wording now. It should make sense a little better if anybody was confused. LOL

well APC, Tripp Lite, Belkin are probably the most popular
they are almost all SPS ( line interactive UPS )
true UPS are alot more expensive and likely overkill

use the selector at APC to play around with a KVA rating that will do for your config and uptime, then shop it with Tripp Lite and Belkin as well
weigh the value you have for additional features and software
and research the power conditioning schemes they employ

feel free to start another thread specifically about UPSs your considering after you do a bit of research ;)
