Comp keeps shutting down

Ok heres the deal I go to bed last night with my comp still running and I wake up and the computer is shutdown. I figure it must have went to sleep or something, but it shouldnt have as I have that disabled. But I try to boot it back up and it comes on then automatically shuts back completely off. I have to turn the power supply off and back on to get it to turn back on. I do not anything overclocked and all bios settings are at default. Sometimes after many tries it will finally boot all the way up into Windows then after a few minutes or so it will just shut off. I have reset the bios twice and still no dice. If anyone has any ideas please post them. It has been flawlessly since December until now. Here is my setup.

Abit IC7-Max3 (bios 1.4 or 14 whatever)
P4 2.8
2 512 Corsair XMS PC3500 Ram
MSI 256Mb Geforce FX 5600

Please help me out if you have any ideas whatsoever.

the ol' blaster virus had this side effect on a few machines I've seen.... try a virus check with ERD commander or some bootable disc
 
I have also tried bootin up Knoppix straight from cd and it still does the same thing. I just got thru trying to turn it on again and as soon as I hit the power button it automatically turns off. Could this be a Power Supply problem?

well it's definately hardware, if it did the same thing in knoppix. Few things I can think are that it's the CPU overheating and shutting down to save itself (normally accompanied by the mobo making mad noises) or it the motherboard northbrigde that's ****ed or finally (and least likely) the power supply is screwed, normally if it's close to death you'll hear the capacitors in the thing making really high pitch sounds on power on or off, and it won't turn from cold.
can you leave it in the BIOS or does that shut off?
 
Ok when I try it now like the lights and fans come on for like a split second then turns right back off. It wont even boot up to the bios now. It didnt make any unual sounds of any kind just shuts off. Oh sh1t please help :( LOL.

unplug and remove everything aside from mobo and CPU and PSU. See if stays up. then add things till it dies, if it still doesn't come up, swap those three parts out with another box to find out what died.
 
Hi,

It sounds like the power supply is doing something to save the system.

unplug everything except the proc, power supply, and system board.

Boot it. If you get beeps (like memory, or keyboard, or video). if you get a RESPONSE than its not your PS. Its most likly something shorting out the Power Supply and that its doing its job.

Add one component at a time (including the keyboard, and mouse don't just assume they are good). Go like this.

  1. Memory
  2. Video Card
  3. Hard Drive
  4. CD-ROM
  5. NIC
  6. Sound Card
  7. etc

Ok I have it all stripped down completely except for the mobo, cpu, power supply. Only thing plugged into the mobo is 12v plug for the cpu, atx plug for mobo, and internal speaker wire. Nothing else. I dont even have the power switch button hooked up I just shorted it out so I could take the power switch out of the loop to make sure that wasnt the problem.

So when I hit the switch on the PS the light on the OTES comes on and the fans spin for a split second then it auto shuts off but the little green indicator light on the mobo stays on showing that it is getting power to the mobo.

Do I need to have the Heatsink and fan on it as well when trying to do all of this?

So what do you all think seems to be the problem? It has to be the CPU, Mobo, or Power Supply right? I appreciate all of you guys help.

edit: Oh yeah and it dont get any beeps whatsoever. It really doesnt have time beep cause it shuts down so fast.
 
Ok guys just to post back my findings. It turns out it was the mobo failing on me. It was a pretty cheap Powmax 400wat PS. But I have now replaced it with a Enermax PS and all is good at the moment. Thanks for all your help.
