I replaced the CPU fan on my Slot A AMD 1GHZ Shuttle AI61, and I think I might have damaged something. It behaves strangely at startup depending on how long it's been off for.
If I leave it off for more then 30 seconds then turn it on it will boot up, read IDE decives SOMETIMES (i can't see any pattern in this), then get all the way to my boot menu. Once I got an NTLDR missing error, most of the time after I select an operating system it just freezes. I also once got a "corrupt hard disk" type error.
When I say freeze I mean this: the computer stops responding, will hang for around 10 seconds, then the screen goes to standby like there's no line input and then power light on the case turns off. The fans, however, keep running and any devices remain on.
After I shut the computer off after it freezes, if I turn it back on immediately, it will freeze immediately - I won't even see the video card screen come up before it tests the RAM. If I leave it off for 30 seconds again, and turn it on again, I get the same results as before.
Sometimes (again, seemingly randomly) when I wait 30 seconds and then turn it on, it will freeze right before it recognizes the IDE devices. This occurs whether or not they are plugged in.
I would have initially thought that it was a heat problem, but the motherboard SAYS the chip isn't running over 75 F when it freezes, and it doesn't feel too hot to the touch (note that I am touching the Slot A casing, not the chip itself).
I am totally lost, and I don't have the money to buy a new motherboard right now. Has anyone heard of anything like this before? Testing the hard drive that was giving the error would be a huge production, but possible if someone thinks the rest of the behaviors are related to that. It's a Segate 30GB, but it is between 4 and 5 years old. I've never had any problems with it before, though.
