Hey guys, as you all know my motherboard went bork the other week.. I am probbaly gonna receive a replacement in a couple of days.. and I need you guys to confirm something for me.

You see, I took everything apart to install my coolermaster hyper 6. everything went nicely... when I turned on the pc... I got no signal, everything powers on and everything. And I am pretty sure I didn't crush my cpu... How rare can this happen anyways? I was extra careful.. anyways.....

There was a burnt smeel coming from under my 6800Ultra... I popped the case right away! stuck my nose under the 6800Ultra and there was a strong nasty burnt smell... grabbed my 6800U out right away, toss it in my other pc.. and it worked great...

So.. I want you guys to confirm that this is not a case of a dead cpu..

I can boot up normally, but without the signal on the monitor... cd drives reads to boot up when it should.... like when I put in a windows xp disk, it reads when it should and it shows the green led on the drive....


Also, my videocard's fan was not turned on, was not warm.... or any sign of life coming out form teh videocard in that motherboard. and remember.. there was a smell coming out straight from the agp slot before...


so my agp slot is dead right? not the cpu? I DO NOT want to spend more money on a cpu.. my parents will KILL me...

O yah, fans, HDD's, optcal drives.. everything powers on except for the videocard in the agp alot...
 
Hmmm... "burnt" cpu's usually don't smell... sounds like you might have fried a voltage regulator or a cap on your mobo... maybe... it's tough to say for sure... sounds like the damaged was localized to the mobo, tho... Granted this is all guess work, but your cpu will likely be ok. :)

well I just pulled it out from the cooler master's hyper 6 box that I left for safe keeping inside my closet to take a quick look.... looks great.. and O yah.... I dont think the core can be cracked very easily anyways... the heatspreader would have to be moved down and such to crack the core.. which I dont think happened :) gosh, I feel so muhc better....
 
I doubt the machine would post and such with a dead cpu... you really need to get the new mobo back... but it's not common to "fry" a cpu... I think the memory would go before the cpu would... imo
 
Sounds just like you said. AGP slot is dead and you need a new mobo. But for curiosities sake put the vid card in another working mobo and see if it isnt the vid card that is to blame. If the vid card checks out you need a new mobo.
 
I think your CPU's okay. It's just your motherboard that's fried. From what I know and experienced, it's not that easy to fry a CPU to death because if it gets too hot to handle, it just shuts down completely or freezes up. But after cooling down, you can turn it on again... but maybe it would shorten the CPU's life (am not sure).

By the way, what's the brand of your M/B?

anyways I know I didnt fry the cpu at all.. I applied the AS5 on it with a dot..blahlbah heatsink on and let it spread the comound... I was just worried I crushed it :) by putting the heatsink on... it is a hyper 6 ya know.. hehe but I will just have to see when my mobo comes back :)
