Hey, ill be moving into the dorms at Penn State shortly to start my IST major. I was wondering if anyone could reccomend me some decent displays for the dorm life. Id like to use it for pc gaming, xbox 360/ps3/wii, and watching TV. Ive been looking at used westinghouse 37 inch monitors for about 800. Are these appropriate for dorm life though. Im not thinking they will take up much space when mounted to the wall.

thanks

Same here, buddy. Just add X-Box and PS2 to that list for now though.

I've been considering the 2407PFW, personally. We'll see if the component has been fixed with A03, though.

that is one expensive piece of equipement to have your drunken roomate fall into and break :D . Plus when I lived in the dorm the walls were either cinder block or you could not make much more than a small nail sized hole in the wall. So if that is your case, u will not be able to succesfully mount the Westinghouse on the wall. So I would check up on your dorm rules for putting things on the wall.

One thing for sure is, you will be the popular kid, or atleast your room will be the popular place for being to watch TV and game if you end up bringing a 37" WS :D Do you sell drugs to afford these things, cause I could not afford shit while living in the dorms :p

I live off campus (senior) and my 4 roomates and I share a 27" television cause last year our 32" busted :(

The 37 inch monitor would best be used mounted to a wall, as you stated. You will have to determine weither or not that will suit you, though. I do not know the layout of penn states dorms (I go to cornell). I, though, wouldn't recomend getting that monitor for two reasons. Firstly, you will still need to get a second monitor to use with your computer. The 37 inch will be too large to place on yoru desk, will be too large to view from the short distances that computer monitors are viewed in small dorms and won't be practical to use as a computer monitor if you mount it on the wall. Secondly, your going to draw more power, and could run teh rish of tripping your rooms breaker if you run the large TV and, say the fridge and microwave.

What I recomend you do is get a nice 20 to 24 inch flat pannel monitor that can serve as the display for your video games, TV and computer. Something with a ton of inputs. The Gateway FPW2185 has DVI, D-Sub, component, composite and Svideo. I'm actually going to put one up for sale this weekend, I can cut you a deal on that if your intrested.

Also, you can look into the New Acer and BenQ 24 inch models that are comming out. The specs of both are supposted to be great.

I kinda lucked into a very nice job running a paintball field near my house on my land. Long story but the money is good. Not to brag but I do alright at poker too :) . That and im not getting a ps3 just a 360 and a wii, so that saves me about a grand.

Those new BenQ's look amazing. Though I will probably not do much work on my desktop, mainly just on my laptop, since they are required for my major. Thanks for the advice.

I would NEVER ever bring something that expensive anywhere near any dorm at any school in the country....I went to a small, private religious affiliated university and even then we had plenty of drunkfests and left the dorm in need of remodeling. ;) Back in college I had a crappy 15" crt hooked to a PII rig with 64mb of ram...and a 6 year old 19" RCA tv for entertainment purposes. :D

Hah i know what you mean about paintball there lol. It funded my tourney play for about a 2 years but im done with that now so it just nets me a nice profit.

Ive pretty much decided on the a new 24 inch benQ when they come out.

thanks guys

HAHA, i also have went to a small private religous affiliated college and just like you siad ther are those drunkfests where you know some shit is gonna get broken, i lost a few xbox controllers over the years because of it :D But once you live off campus it is easier to take care of your shit... cause your roomates know to take care of the stuff and you know that it is a good idea to hide it when u have parties at your house.

So i agree with joemama, stick to the cheap stuff while you are in the dorm, better play it safe than sorry.

If you're going to take something expensive and easily stolen/damaged into a dorm, get insurance first.Comprehensive (all perils) insurance doesn't cost much and will save your wallet should the dorm druggie decide to steal your LCD to pay for meth.

man in the four years i lived on campus if i locked my door more then a dozen times that was a lot. ITs funny too cuz this year i had a massive stereo, server, desktop, new laptop, and a really expensive camera. and nothing i mean nothing was ever stolen from. I say wait on the expensive shit. Its ok to take a nice puter, but wait to see what kind of roommate you get. i know i lucked out and my roommates were pretty good and would usually ask how shit worked before they messed with anything. Just dont advertise what you have and you should be good. Also if you have a nice stereo, leave it at home for at least the first year.

Have fun in College. i wish i were going back/at school right now.

Give those brain cells hell

Cheers

I would just take the thing with you when you go home to visit family. Most of the roomate-stole/trashed-my-stuff stories ive heard starts with "I left town for the weekend..." I always took my good stuff mostly because I would have been staying in an empty bedroom for the weekend/break otherwise. We also had big sturdy auto-shutting and locking doors so leaving your door open took some effort. Consider getting your own room for the first quarter or so, chances are you will be able to transfer into a room with a roomate you picked after the first quarter (not the loony guy who leaves dried deer blood in the fridge for most of a quarter).

alright, if you have a roomate at school, PLEASE be carefull. Something you dont want happening is him/her leaving the room door open, going to the bathroom or class, and then comming back to the room with one very expensive monitor short.
I am in an engineering school, and honestly they gave us a huge desk space, at least i think its huge compared to what i was expecting. I was able to have my laptop and tons of electronic crap all on my desk(pushed back toward the wall) and still enough room for books and papers at the front part of my desk so i could work. I even know people who covered their entire desk with entertainment media, and then had the keyboard tray as their work space (since those were also relatively large areas that were usually hidden under the desk surface). I'm just saying... you might have more room then you think you do, and can have more on it then you think you will be able too
