Anyone having coil whine on thier cards? My sapphire does squeel a bit in Furmark and I was wondering if it's normal.

Also I notice my card throtles alot even though the temps are below 60c at all times. Is there a way to make that stop?

it's currently clocked at 1010/1450 for both GPUs
 
i dont know about the throttling but i do know that coil whine is fairly common. I've had no experience with it on the newer ati series video cards personally but ymmv
 
My 6990 has it, and so does my buddy's. Did a little research and apparently it's pretty common on those cards. No biggie either way since it isn't linked to any sort of failure, so it's okay to ignore it :)
 
sorry to necro, but having the same coil whine... found a hot glue / nailpolish trick to dampen it, but haven't tried it. Hopefully my new case will keep it to a minimum! I only hear it now that I've done the xigmatek 140mm mod to the card.
 
Not on my gb windforce 7970, until i flipped the bios swtich, i thought i heard it first time but not since (i only just did it to see why my card is running so hot)
 
No whine on my plain Jane XFX card. The throttling is courteous of AMD (Nvidia too) once it senses that Furmark or similar apps are running. You could water cool it and it would still throttle.
 
I returned one sapphire 7970 OC because of the monitors dropping. It had coil whine.
Got my replacement card monitors are fine now but this card also has coil whine only on high fps though.

Thought about trying again but what if the one i get is worse.

Weird that some people get it and others don't.
 
Also a Sapphire 7970 OC. Sent one back, rolling the dice on a replacement. If this one doesn't pan out either, I may look into other models.

It couldn't handle medium-level Crysis without whining, for crying out loud
 
I had 2 different 7970s that had significant coil whine.. the first was an XFX DD one, the second was a Gigabyte Windforce...
 
im inclined ot believe some of the whine may come from poorly designed power supplies with not enough juice on the PCIe power rail starving the card.

Im using a Corsiar Gold series AX850, so not a chance i dont have enough juice.

I have an HX850 and have significant whine.

Man just loaded up crysis and i get it all the time in that game. UGH. Usually its just menus.
Considering just returning it for the 670, performance close to the same for less money.
 
My Windforce had coil wine too......I pretty much lathered it in nail polish and hot glue. All it did was make a big mess with little/no results.

I'd forgo that whole operation and just try RMA'ing it. If that doesn't work, sell it and get something else.

Also, you may try letting the card sit on a menu that makes the highest whining noise. Some people can get it to go away in a couple of days/weeks by doing this frequently.
 
Just picked up a 670, returning the 7970, bad coil whine, bad drivers and saving 80 bucks.
 
I have 2 MSI 6970s. One of them has what I assume is coil whine while the other is fine. They are exactly the same model and purchased at the same time, so it could just be a manufacturing issue.

It's noticeable when bitcoin mining, but gaming sounds drown it out quite easily so it's never concerned me.
 
I remember seeing a post on either this forum or possibly on overclock.net that some Sapphire 7970 Dual OC card owners resolved the coil whine just by switching to the other bios.

None of three 7970's I have owned had coil whine though
