I am going to purchase a new monitor for my upcoming build this weekend and I need some advice. I unfortunately do not have any stores nearby to view monitors so my resources are limited. The monitor will be used for mostly gaming, movies and internet browsing with work and school related Microsoft office programs and such thrown in. I am trying to decide which type of monitor to purchase so that I can narrow it down to a specific monitor. My questions are:

- 4K vs 1440P
Which of these performs better in the general everyday tasks I listed, especially gaming? I've read mixed reviews on 4K as either being amazing or not worth it on smaller screens and there being scaling issues and such. Is 4K a noticeable difference over 1440P and is the extra resolution worth any of the potential problems?

- Screen Size
What screen size is the perfect fit for these resolutions? I have owned many 23-24" TN and IPS Panels plus briefly a 24" 2560x1440 Korean IPS. For the past few years, I owned an ASUS VG248QE and Dell U2515H so that covers most of my experience. I am considering going 27"-28" this time but I am trying to figure out the sweet spot for these resolutions.

- Refresh Rate and Response Time
AFAIK, the 4K monitors only offer 60hz so that is fine if I go that route. With the 1440P monitors, there are many different combinations. How do the 144hz+ monitors of this resolution perform? I enjoyed that feature on my ASUS but probably appreciated the picture quality of my Dell IPS more. Also, I will need to stay at 100+ FPS to take advantage of the high refresh which I'm not sure how feasible that is with a single 1080 or 1070 GPU at 1440P. How much of a difference does the response rate make between the IPS and TN panels? It is usually ~ 5ms vs 1ms.

- Suggestions?
Which resolution would you guys recommend? If 1440P, would you suggest an IPS panel as usual or are the TN panels worthwhile? Also if 1440P, is the 144hz+ option worth it or is it too difficult to take advantage of that feature due to frame rates? I mostly play games such as WoW Legion, League of Legends, other Blizzard games, and Xbox One console games with some single player campaigns of new games.

I would greatly appreciate any help in narrowing my search. There are far too many options and I have no idea how to start limiting them to only a few and eventually one. I don't really have a set price range but certainly under $1,000 and preferably much lower if possible unless the higher price is well worth it. Finally, which specific monitors would you recommend? I see mostly Asus, Dell, and Acer in everything I have read but that still leaves a ton of options and I am not sure if there are others worth looking at.

Thanks for the help!

My desk is 72" x 34". I actually built it when I had a triple monitor setup to have plenty of room for them plus my computer, xbox one, and anything else I could possibly need. Desk size definitely should not be a problem. lol

As for budget, I am certainly not paying like $1K+ for a monitor but I do not really have a set budget. If it makes a huge difference and isn't a ridiculous price then I will consider it. It appeared like the range was ~ $200-$800 depending on which resolution and what screen size & refresh rate.

OK, got it.

From my experience, going 4k on a monitor <28" really isn't worth it. It's hard to notice the pixel difference in games unless you're looking for it, and it makes general desktop use harder because the text becomes far too small on some apps. So If you're going 4K, go >30" IMO.

I'd personally go with 1440p for what you mentioned. I think GPUs need to catch up a bit to 4k gaming. I'm not a huge fan of >60Hz stuff, but some people swear by it. Unless you're into competitive type FPS games though, it's not going to make that much difference. Plus pushing 144fps is hard in most games.

Have you considered a 34" ultrawide (3440x1440) type display? I'm a massive fan of the form factor, having come from some multi-display setups in the past. The immersion factor is great, it's not as GPU stressful as a 4k, and they're not too bad on cost.

I am actually into competitive gaming. I do play Shooter type games but I play those on Xbox One. Xbox One only plays at 60 FPS though so I am not sure how much of a difference the 144hz is going to make. I do, however, also play League of Legends competitively and I take my WoW very seriously so both platforms are important. I mainly play LoL, WoW, other Blizzard games, and Xbox One games so staying 144+ FPS shouldn't be too much of a problem, at least at 1440P. Gaming is definitely the #1 priority with this monitor but it needs to handle everything else at least decently well. As for the Ultrawide monitors, I have seen them and I do not think they are for me. I will be snagging an extra IPS screen or two for productivity then have one larger, awesome monitor to game on.

Anything over 60Hz won't matter for the Xbox gaming.

The only other question would be how sensitive you are to things like backlight bleed and IPS glow. If you're not bothered or don't notice them, I'd get a 1440P IPS panel w/ a 75Hz or higher refresh. Maybe something like the Acer XF270HU or the ($500-ish), or get the G-Sync version for $850. 27in, 2560x1440, IPS, 144Hz (or faster with OC), lots of really good reviews.

You can get a TN version for even cheaper if the IPS glow bothers you.

Every IPS monitor I have owned had backlight bleed and glow. Of course I do not enjoy it and would prefer to not have it or to have as little of it as possible. The superior colors and overall picture quality were certainly worth it though. I just want to be sure that the slower refresh rate of the IPS panels do not negatively effect the 144Hz models. They're only 3-4ms slower than the TN panels so I am assuming it should not be a problem. I just did not want a lot of ghosting or anything like that.

Do you think G-Sync is worth the price premium? I know it is supposed to smooth out the picture and eliminate screen tearing but the G-Sync screens are quite a lot more expensive and are pretty rare which limits my options.

Check out the HP Omen 32
75hz
Amva+
5ms response
freesync
1440p
~400ish $

I'm really impressed by mine. I like it better than the 35" acer xz350cu and am still trying to determine if I like it better than my reigning champion the Dell 3014.

I agree - stay away from 4K at this time on smaller displays. It hurts framerate for games, scaling issues are still present like steam ui, and text is too small at native resolution.

That is a really nice looking monitor. However, if I was going 30"+ then I would probably just go 4K.

If going 1440P, I would probably want a 144 Hz monitor. That is kind of the tradeoff and deciding factor of either more resolution but only 60 FPS and scaling issues or 1440P with 144+ fps, faster monitor overall, and less issues.

Price seems to be a strange factor in this choice too because the 4K monitors appear to be at least $400+ cheaper than the 1440P 144Hz IPS monitors. It is not a huge deal but somewhat surprising and will end up being at least $1,400 just for the graphics card and monitor alone. Idk if a single 1080 or 1070 would be enough to keep the FPS high enough on either option. Then again, the games I play most of the time, such as WoW and League, are not that GPU intensive so it might be fine.

I need to get this figured out and ordered by tonight so any and all help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I have the Asus PG348Q. I did at one time try the Acer XB321HK. My current system atm is overkill for either monitor as I get over over 60+ fps in every game at max settings including Crysis 3 and Metro Last Light. I didn't think the Acer was all that much better then the Asus, so I went with the Asus because it's almost as sharp as the Acer and it's 21X9. Most of my 200+ games on Steam and Orgin support 3440X1440P.

I would recommend either one if your budget was $1300 but it's not so I would suggest either the Asus PG279Q or the Acer XB271HU. Both can OC to 166Hz and is under $900.
