Hi ya'll...

OK, so I have a computer case turning red on my porch. It's some sorta spray paint from like five or ten years ago... I can ferret up brand and color details if it really matters. Right now what I remember is that it's Bright Effing There's A Fire Engine Cominatcha Red (I wanna say they call it Candy Apple Red)... I'm 90% certain that the word "enamel" shows up on the can prominently, but I'll have to check.

Here's the thing. I want to make a poor man's applique of sorts on the side, by which I mean a piece of clear Avery sticker "paper", and then cover the whole thing (four sides) with clear coat.

The clear coat I have is Krylon (brand) Clear-Coat of the "satin" finish variety. I have word from them (called 800-4KRYLON to find out) that this is some sorta clear lacquer-type stuff.

So: how do I apply the clear coat in a way that will not f*** up either the sticker or the paint underneath and around it? Can I even do that? I *really* hope I don't have to buy another can o' stuff for this...

EDIT LIKE 5SEC AFTER POSTING: the red crap is "American Tradition by Valspar" Interior/Exterior Ultra Enamel, #165837 Cherry Red Gloss. I still say it's Fire Engine Inna Can Red myself.

Perhaps the reason that I'm not getting a response is because I haven't explained myself well enough.

What I want, really, is a super-durable paint job. As in: slipping with the screwdriver in putting the case back together does NOT scratch the whole way through the paint.

What's the best way of achieving that, if not through clear coat?

I think you didn't get any responses because your original question seemed like you had already picked the materials and were just asking "how do I apply [paint]?". The best advice in that case is really for you to get a piece of scrap metal and try it out for yourself before working on actual case.

Another reason why people might be reluctant to answer is that you said "poor man's" and "don't have to buy another...". So that excludes answers like: have the case professionally powdercoated, or get some epoxy resin primer+paint+coating.

As for the first, I like to work with what I have... but if I need to buy something I'm open to it.

As for the second...I'd love to have this case powdercoated. I can't afford that in a million years. Sorry, but I'm living with a disabled parent on a fixed income here. Can't justify a paint job like that with what I got.

In that case, of course I understand you can't justify it. I have to repeat what I said before: make tests with scrap metal, and pick the best solution. My guess is that your avery paper will unfortunately make for an ugly finish. Although it might protect the metal, it will be soft and what I think you actually want is a hard glass-like surface. In that case, if your budget allows, see if you can find any deals on epoxy resin. Maybe look for stuff that's designed for coating table-tops or similar.

I don't care to actually do the research, but I know where you can find more information. Likely the information you're looking for.

You'll find a lot by looking for information on painting model cars.

I did do a bit of research. You may need a different clear.

I'm not looking to coat the entire case in avery stuff. I just have one "decal" that I want to put on one side. The rest would be paint, unless I clear-coat-ed over it.

I really don't care what I use (to a point) as long as it's durable, clear, and looks nice. I'm not looking for a specific finish, so much as the ability to avoid scratching the paint simply by slipping with a screwdriver.

Sorry if I'm coming across heavy-handedly here; I'm really p***ed off at my netbook right now (it's being extraordinarily slow) but that's a thread for another place.
