I've always just used the alcohol. Careful when pulling off the cooler, memory usually has thermal pads that will have to be replaced.

Ditto on the alcohol. I just did a GTX 580 about an hour ago. Bought the card from another member who turned out to be a smoker and I could smell it. So, I disassembled the card, and q-tipped the whole thing. Done this with a few cards and it works very well. The higher the percentage the less residue it will leave and the easier it will clean your thermal grease and tim pad oil off.

Yeah I used 99.9% alcohol when cleaning off my GTX 670 and put on an Arctic Accelero Twin Turbo. Worked like a charm!
