Uhm, yeah... If you've seen my recent worklog, you know my computer is dusty with a capital d...

Anyone know a good way to clean out caked on dust/paint (this computer resides in my computer room/workshop).

I've heard of running them through the dishwasher, and am not opposed to do this (seeing as I have some replacement lubricant if it's required) but I'm wondering if anyone had any better ideas?

I know fans can survive water, so don't say anything :p.
 
Soaked em in alcohol did you?

Will try it. Normally I'd steal some from my usual box of 100+ Yates, but I've not gotten a client order in some time, therefore havn't had the need to buy more :eek:

I'd need... Canned fire to get this grime off... People are always smoking outside, which goes RIGHT into my PC from the window/vent I made for it.

I used the dishwasher, and although the fan got a piece of onion stuck to it, it's really clean, and quieter now :)
 
You guys talking about soaking the whole fan in water or just the blades? WOW if you can soak a fan this is news to me!

I soaked my whole fans in rubbing alcohol... helps get the grime that's really stuck on...

I was cleaning my brothers computer, he's a smoker...

the aluminum pieces got washed in the bathtub, smaller parts got the sink + rubbing alcohol... took 3-4 hours

I put the entire fan in the dish washer, without heated dry.

Then I flung it around to get all the excess water off, and placed it on the top rack of my oven, set to 170f :p.

Fan abuse at maximum. BUT, I did re-oil the bearings.
 
An ounce of prevention...

You should look at modifying your case to use slight positive pressure and then use a really good filter on the intake fan(s). I've converted my case (Lian-li) to use a pleated central heating filter instead of the crap filter it came with. I bought a 3M Filtrete filter with very high filtering number. I cut it to size and kept the pleats in use (i.e. - I didn't flatten it out). Pleats give a lot of surface area - hence more air flow with less pressure loss. I used tape to seal the ends of the pleats.

I now have much better filtering for a $15 investment in filter material + a bit of time.

Wouldn't work for me on multiple levels... My fans are all undervolted to 5v, and I live in an environment where there's about a millimeter of city grime built up on everything every week... The back of my monitor had about half a centimeter of grime on it when I checked last.

WOW I never thought that would be possible, I guess you do learn something new everyday!
 
It sounds cheaper (and safer) to just buy a new fan, if we're talking 80-120mm here. Than to take a chance that not just a piece of onion, but something else happens to get the fan machanism stuck and your stuff blows up.

I personally take it outside and use my electric leaf blower for about 20 seconds. The lint lands on my neighbor's yard at a whopping 225MPH!

UPDATE: Just looked at your pics... yep the leaf blower out back should do it!!!
 
But wheres the fun in that? (replacing them) the leaf blower sounds like fun!!!

now if only it could spew fire too!!!

Cheaper? how is 0$ cheaper than 20$ for replacement fans, + 20$ shipping?

And I use watercooling, with many failsafes to prevent overheating... This isn't really an issue to me.

I'd probably just buy new ones if canned air didn't work.
 
Another great example that smoking is a disgusting habit, it clogged your computers lungs too O_O
