Are there any firware upgrades or anything for the Cisco 3550 so it can work with the 802.3af PoE standard? It comes with the pre 802.3af cisco PoE standard that only works with some Cisco devices. I want to setup a VLAN on the switch to support 3 Linksys AP's. Any ideas? Or am I going to have to go with the little inline adapters?

You need a hardware upgrade. The switch would have PWR in its model number (like WS-C3550-24PWR) if it physically can support PoE.

You're going to have to use an inline power injector for 802.3af. Otherwise you'll have to spend on a 3560 (pre-Cisco 802.3af and IEEE 802.3af).

Thats what I was afraid of. Seems the 802.3af standard sends data and power over the same lines. Not sure why though. Alright thanks.
