in first person shooter games, or any game really, whenever i turn left or right, or theres fast action on the screen, part of the display gets 'choppy' as in it lags behind a bit, or a few lines of pixels will flicker. sometimes theres even a line or two. i built my computer, and tbh i thought it was my video card, a gtx 280, but then i built my i7 rig with a 5870 and it still does it. So does that mean its my monitor?

thats what i was thinking, why i was asking if a new monitor would fix it.

Get something that has low input lag. Samsung P2370 or something that has no HDI support. Most monitor with HDI support have shitty input lag because of the controller.

This chop you speak of can be caused by a few different things. Turning Vscync on is by far the dumbest way to fix it.

1) Mouse settings - If you crank your mouse DPI up then turn your cursor movement speed way down, the mouse camera pan becomes too slow and too sensitive for a 60fps game to compensate for and you get lots of vsync chop. Turn your cursor movement speed higher and DPI lower and you'll notice it will go away or be much less bad.

2) PC Stability - If your PC is overclocked and can pass prime95 or other bench tests, it can still be unstable and choppy from a display output point of view. Try raising chipset voltage to PCI-E or FSBv or other settings.

Some monitors will chop more than others but it's usually more to do with what mouse settings you're using. I can easily create or remove vsync chop by changing settings on a Razer mouse. Mice like Logitech G9 have less issues with it but can still do it with the right settings.
