Choosing RAM

Hey guys. I'm buying up all my parts on monday and I just need to make one more decision.

First of all, I'm poor, so my budget for ram will be about $190 USD.

I want to end up with 1GB of ram (2x 512 running dual channel) PC3200.

I'm getting a Barton 2500+, so I'll be overclocking for sure. Board will be an Abit NF7-S.

I looked at the OCZ and the Corsair XMS.... expensive :(

I want to buy good ram that's okay to be OC'd (to 3200+ speeds)...

Also, what about CL? I'm not sure what it should be... Is higher better? or lower? I'm guessing lower since it's latency... and memory should be fast, right? ;)

Anyone have any suggestions?

btw: If you find the OCZ or Corsair XMS from newegg or some american supplier, keep in mind that I'm Canadian so I don't have access to the prices you see. Just suggest some makes/models and i'll have a look. Thank you!!

my understanding of RAM as it is:

pc3200 = 400mhz
pc2700 = 333mhz
RAM speeds = FSB speeds times two. and it's generally best to have FSB and RAM running at the same speeds. your 2500+ will be stock at 166mhz *so 333mhz* and the 3200+ easy oc is 200 fsb *400mhz*

if you want to overclock your CPU then you'll have to go with pc3200. and pc3200 will support and overclock *barring you have shit ram like me =-/* i'd definitely go with a name brand if possible. i'd honestly say just wait until you have some more money, especially since you're overclocking. i thought any brand would work and when i OC every so often everything crashes cept for standard booting into windows. also don't get caught up in the "pc4000" hubbub. also the general consensus on these boards seems to be that OCZ sucks nuts.

FSB and RAM speeds are tied together. so try and stick with the same speeds on both.

Ahh okay, yeah that clears things up a little.

I still don't know which brand of ram to buy.

OCZ, crap?

Kingston? Kingston Value? Infineon? OCZ (no good, apparently?)

What about Samsung? Is that just Generic ram? Corsair?

i would go with one of the following: Corsair XMS series, Geil, Kingston, or Mushkin

keep in mind that anything with "value" on it is usually not the greatest and u should stay away from them

This may be a stupid question, but what exactly makes the xms version of corsair's ram better? As opposed to the $145/1gig ram on newegg?

you kidding right? you cant buy Corsair or mushkin for that price. 1G at least is 250 for good stuff not that crappy stuff where u put it in and it runs like crap.

Uh thanks, but like I said, I can't order from newegg unfortunately.

The cheapest I can get it for is $240usd from ncix.com

If I ordered from newegg, the customs fees and crap like that would just be too much :(
