Choice for new LCD

Ok, I'm finally gonna upgrade my KDS Rad-5 to a new one. I can't decide between a Samsung 193P or a Dell 2001FP. The Samsung is a 19" with a lower resolution but a better brightness and can run games very well (comparitivley). The Dell is 20", 1600x1200, has S-video in (which i'd use for my PlayStation) and is good at playing movies. Now, on my current crappy monitor, i don't notice too much ghosting or blurring while plaing FPS. So, should I go with the Dell? Its a good price so I'm thinking i should...thoughts?

I had considered the Dell 2001FP but after reading some of the threads regarding the screen door effect, and about some users having to send their LCD back to Dell numerous times to get one without defects, I opted for the Samsung 193P. I had also considered the Viewsonic VX910 until I found out about their 1 year warranty.

I am VERY happy with my 193P. I installed it on the wall using the included wall mount bracket and hooked it up with the included DVI cable and then proceded to drool all over my keyboard! The image quality is awesome. I haven't noticed any ghosting (it maybe there, but I cannot see it) in Battlefield Vietnam, America's Army, or Joint Ops.

At the time I bought it, the Dell was more expensive. Now I think they're about the same price. If I had it to do over again, I'd still opt for the 193P, even if I had to pay more for it. To me, it's worth every penny

while the dell gives you a 20" that costs about the same as a 19" samsung, the questionable quality of the dell from what i have read would prompt be to consider samsung more. i have personally used many models of samsung lcds and they have always been top quality.. however happy owners of the 2001fp swear by it tho

Funny you post this as I was in the same posistion up untill 2am last night. I must have spent 20 hours over the past 4 days looking at specs and any review I could find. This probably wont help much though as I havent recieved either monitor yet (purchased from newegg last night) but Ill tell you my reasons for going with the 193p. I planned on removing my ageing 17" a75f crt viewsonic and adding another LCD to my entry level 17" lcd. I wanted to be able to put both monitors on my desk in front of me versus one on the desk and my lcd about 30° off to the side.

Not in any particular order...
Asthetics:
2001fp: No matter how many images I could get my hands on of the 2001fp, I didnt like the styling. The base is hideous to me and I was looking at every VESA swingarm base manufacturer for a different one. They start around 175$ retail, not all that cheap. Also due to the base design I would have to pull the monitor out to the desk edge, possibly unstable, in order to fit the 25" minimun portrait stance (20" vertical clearance in my desk).

193P: I was impressed alot by its overall design, ease of posistioning and the versatillity of said posistioning. This was increased ten-fold when I rushed to compusa to look at one. They had it in a vga switch with like 10 other monitors and all the signal lines ran through the powerlines and boxes, so the image sucked and had the waviest image I have ever seen. Nice way to sell a 850$ monitor!! Plus it looked to have been running at 1024x768.. But I got to play with the monitors physical adjustments. It was very smooth to position and stayed in that position rather firmly unlike some reviews. I noticed no sag even though it was a display unit. Being able to veiw it in portrait and sit the monitors lower egde on the desk was great. The thing also just looks extremely HOT in person!! Its also a very solidly built piece.

Options:
2001fp: the dell has a ton of connectivity options which was a big holding factor for me.It has nearly every connection you could need.

193p: This didnt have very many options going for it other then cable management, dvi, and an included VESA plate, which I may use.

Personal display opinions:
2001fp: The native 1600x1200 is a definate plus, but also a minus. I would have had a decent amount more desktop / usable area with the dell. I do mostly design work on my rig with the occasional gaming / movie watching. The extra area to view increased image sizes would have been nice. But from what I have read in some reviews the res has the same effect to that of the native res on a 17" monitor. I find the text on my 17" lcd rather small at times, and have heard that the 20" at 1600x1200 was simillar. I couldnt get over the backlighting, screendoor, dead pixel (I mean with that many more pixels theres bound to be a higher doa pixel rate) and other issues. Thus coupled with people returning monitors to get ones in worse condition back. But Dell CS is top notch, and then again one could buy a 193p though them and get the same service The overall reviews from the users also had me convinced on getting one.

193p: Since I do graphic work, and seeing most if not all reviews state IQ was better on the 193p, was nice. The physical screen size isnt much less then the 2001fp, and since I have a 17" to hold tool bars and such, it wasnt a real big factor. The ease of rotation comes back for photo editing / design as its nice to have that ease when viewing or working on multiple portrait and landscape orientated images. I can maximize my work area easilly by screen rotation and wont need to rely on the larger 1600x1200 res of the 2001fp, because screen rotation would become a bother with pulling the 2001 out to fit and all. The larger pixel size of the 193p will be easier on my eyes which I find get tired of the small text on my 17" after a while after having corrective surgery (I have to go back for enhancements soon as well).


Those are just some of my observservations and selling points. Its a large chunk of change to drop either way and Im still a bit anxious.. Most probably wont apply in this long winded post but I thought I would share.

Yea this is my problem. I can get the 2001FP for cheaper than the 193P right now. I haven't really looked into how dell handles problems with their monitors, but I'm assuming its alright. All the monitors we have in my office are dell and they look great to me. I'm not doing any gaming on them

but other than that they look fine. I don't see them needing to be swapped out all the time either, and with thousands of them, thats pretty good.

soooo...i'm still undecided...

Yeah, when I checked out the 193 at Fry's, it looked good! I've kinda gotten used to the way a Dell looks, but it won't match my Rad-5 if i decide to use both. So maybe if i use both still, the 193 will have enough room for everything else. I was kinda worried about how the text would look at 1600x1200, but thats what I got glasses for
