I have a wd1200jb for c: and a wd2500yd (new 16mb, sata2, raid drive) for d:
I go to install win2k on c: and during the install chkdsk comes up and wants to check d: I'm like, "Well that's probably a good idea", so I let it run. All of the sudden, the screen is filling up with all this text that's going so fast I can't read it. I make out BonJovi and I'm thinking, "What's it doing with my mp3's?" I hit the reset button on the case. Chkdsk comes up again on the next boot. I'm like, "Crap no." I escape and load windows. I take a glance at my mp3 directory and notice that like 5GB of mp3's are gone.
I reformatted and chdsk came up during the install again. I let it run, but kept my finger over reset. This time it started posting all these lines of...

type stuff. I looked back at my mp3's and they were all there, but none of them would play. I looked around some more and realized that pictures wouldn't load, dv-avi's wouldn't play, and some avi's would play other files that I deleted months ago. I ran 2 anti-virus programs and neither showed problems. I ran wd's datalife diagnostics and it found no problems. I ended up running chkdsk like 5 times and deleting files that I found to be messed up before things are finally getting back in order. Chkdsk is no longer doing the recovering thing. It's just running through without error.
There were 4 main areas that were effected (zip's, mp3's, dv avi's, pictures). Now, I've heard of virii and such that will go after porn and mp3's. Maybe it had something to do with that (I didn't have porn, but how is a program going to tell the difference).
Thankfully, I had most of my mp3's on dvd and most of my avi footage on tape. What I've noticed is that it seems that new stuff, since the issue started, that is written to the drive is messed up. For instance, I downloaded new audio drivers and installed them. I reformatted again and they are now corrupted (dos box icon instead of colorful icon and command prompt opens/closes when double-clicked). Also, I put all of my mp3's back on and chkdsk started showing them having problems, so I tried to delete them and I couldn't.
Maybe the filesystem got corrupted or something. I'm not sure, but it has been the bane of my weekend. Are there any ideas as to what could have caused this and keep it from happening again? I store masters on these drives and even considered going with raid5, but if this type of thing happens, then I don't know if raid5 would fix it. It doesn't seem to be a hardware issue.
