Quick question here, I have an Asus a8n-e motherboard that had the chipset fan go out on it, I removed the heatsink/fan to replace it with an oem fan sent from Asus, my question is, how important is the little plastic sticker that sits between the chipset and the heatsink? I'm not that good at descriptions, but its black and surrounds the core of the chipset leaving the core bare to the bottom of the heatsink. Is this something that's necessary?

There should be nothing between the chipset and its heatsink. Can you provide pictures/a better description?

It sounds like he's referring to a shim - something to help protect the core from cracking. I'm not sure that you need to worry about keeping it, as the stock Asus cooler probably isn't all that heavy, nor will you be removing/reinstalling it often (if ever).

[edit] something like so?..

Are you talking about a pad that surrounds the core? That's a pad that the heatsink sits on so not all the pressure is on the core. Does it look like this? (Look at the silicone pad on the second picture I posted. It's clear looking).

Its not quite a shim... its almost as flimsy as a sticker. I got home and I took another look at it, I'm pretty sure I dont need it, I'm going to go ahead and remount the new fan/heatsink without the bastard. The more I think about it, it probably kept the pre-applied thermal grease from getting on the rest of the chip.

it IS a shim. they use it along with the useless TIM they put under chipset coolers normally. you can use it or not use it. ive seen chipset cooler reviews wehre the reviewer puts it back on etc. actually iff you dont want it mail it to me, i'll use it on my naked opty
