Chips On DVDs Could Prevent Theft

No, I'm not Todd_a. I just said that sorry for double posting, after him doing the exact same thing. But I just did it because I didn't find the edit button that doesn't even exist. So yeah, sorry for the confusion.

There is no edit button in the News section ;)
Ohh ok, thanks. Maybe that explains why there is other features missing on other forums. Like the missing Next Page button in the Case Modding forum, and stuff like that. Also, I have some incompatibility issues with displaying pages from the real old Macs on my government class. :p

But you didn't double-post. Or I'm really losing my mind.

I don't see how inflating everyones costs for production and pissing a lot of customers off would outweigh the issue of a few DVD's being stolen... isn't that the Loss Prevention guys jobs to make sure these things aren't stolen in the first place? What about packaging id's, are the security so lazy that they don't even notice a guy taking dvd's out of the box and out from the packaging????

Sounds like everyone is going to pay an increased cost for DVD's so that the store can be even more negligent.

It's shit like this mixed with increased prices that increases piracy... and I bet the MPAA would make sure to blame piracy as a result in loss of sales, rather than their ridiculous tactics.

The desperation is almost palatable.

I don't think they'll ever learn. The solution is to reduce the price of the content to the point where it's not worth the effort to steal it. If they'd reduce the price of DVD movies or music CD's to $2.99 (just tossing that figure out), they'd come out ahead. They wouldn't need to spend bazillions on anti-theft crap or even waste time and effort to pursue counterfeiters.

Idiots!

People would still pirate the movies regardless of price. Download movies for free, from the comfort of the computer chair... or drive to walmart/bestbuy/wherever and spend $2.99 after standing in line for 20 minutes near people with too many unsupervised kids.

If not for that, then the money... Ive also worked in retail (unfortunately) for several years... If customers are willing to get upset, yell, and accuse you of trying to screw them out of 20 or 30 cents on something which costs several hundred... If that isnt a good enough example, look at gas stations.

People will drive around to save 5-10c per gallon, and complain if it goes up a penny. It doesnt matter who you are and how much money you do or dont have, but I dont see the "make it cheaper" argument valid for music, movies, cars, drugs, alcohol...or anything.

I would definitely buy a lot lot more if it were cheaper, likely more than I spend now. Why? Less hassle, better feeling of "legitimacy", and not feeling like I'm getting screwed out of my money. That said, words are cheap, but I dare the industry to try it. I think they would make a new customer out of me.

have they never heard of assets protection? its called hiring some fucking security guards to beat some punk thieves down when they try to steal shit from the store...

DVD price = ?
Security guard wages per hour = ?

They may not have heard of asset protection, but they've probably heard of maths.

D'oh, forgot about the edit button.

Anyways, this will fail miserably, the cost to reward ratio is too high.

They have to change the CD manufacturing process to accommodate it then they have to install equipment in the stores and train staff to use it.

This will increase the base cost of the CD/DVD, so either they make less money per unit or put up the price. + Price - Sales.

Ah, but the decrease in shoplifting will offset this cost.

How?

Some shoplifters will take the time to read the the tiny little sticker that says "This won't work if it's stolen" and leave it alone, some will take it anyway and crack it with a homebrew kit, the rest won't notice and take it anyway, scratch their heads, bin it and try to steal another somewhere else.

I'm thinking the "Crackits" and the "Don't Cares" will make up the vast, vast, vast majority of shoplifters.

And the folks stealing stuff in volume, well, it's a business for them, they'll just buy or make the scanners.

How much money do they really lose on pirated DVD's. Me personally, I want quality, and I have friends who burn DVD's. The quality is not there, the video looks like crap. No thanks. I'll purchase mine.
