Moving into a new condo, and need to build a SMALL system for a webserver. Not even P-chassis XPC, one of the G-chassis (or smaller) would work, though. My desktop is a rather decent ST20G5 build, and this needs to be no bigger than that (desktop will be out, this is just going to sit in a closet).
I'm kind of torn by three factors - trying to balance them, so wondering the best system for each:
So....it's really a bargain hunt. The first two points are idle thoughts running through my head that need not be considered....but if they proved to be possible, that'd be fun. Otherwise....meh. Doesn't matter.
Need a whole system here - CPU, ram, barebones system (case/PSU/mobo/HSF), hdd, and optical drive - for under $500. WELL under, if possible. I'm really used to building more high-end SFFs, and consider myself well an expert on that. But finding CHEAP parts...uhh...I wouldn't even know where to *look*! Newegg doesn't even seem to *stock* Shuttle's older models.

- Having Socket 939 and PCI-E would be nice, so as I upgrade my existing system, I can upgrade my webserver by putting the second-hand parts in it. On the other hand...it's a friggin WEB server - although running VERY intensive software for work - it will never be hooked to a monitor or keyboard or used for gaming. Plus, I can only really *afford* to upgrade so often by *selling* my older parts off to buy new ones. So....moot point?
- Does have very heavy duty analysis software running on it to experiment for work. Min specs for our software are dual processors (2.8ghz+) and 2gb ram. So a dual-core processor and 2gb of ram would be really nice to have. But that's for analyzing heavy duty data....which this box will also never have on it, so....another moot point?
- Would sure be nice to be cheap! REALLY cheap! This may well be the most important point, unless awesome deals in one of the first two points bumps them up some.
- Integrated graphics VERY important! I may need to hook it up to my desktop monitor to diagnose hardware issues, and I don't want to have to fuss with an expansion graphics card.
- Cool. -ish, anyway. And still quiet! Going to be in an enclosed space (closet), so components with known heating issues are no good.
- Not a requirement - but sure would be nice to have GbE. Will need to have SATA.
