Cheap Whitebox SAN

in napp-it under pools you'll see a column labeled "sync" if you click on the link that most likely says "standard" right now you'll be able to select disabled.

I also see you are running a 1000MB benchmark. Being that FC is considered "block level storage" by ESXi, writing a 1000MB file might not be hitting the RAM cache at all. You can confirm this by running a 100MB benchmark. I also would remove the L2ARC (read cache) for testing purposes. Enabling round robin is esxi you are seeing 2 paths right?

Something else to look into is setting up ESXi to work with a queue depth of 64 instead of 32.

I just realized I need a router to connect/isolate my lab from the rest of the home network. Looking at using a cisco 1841 or some flavour of open source router such as pfsense. I am not sure which is best option/ which offers me the most experience in using?

Open to any and all suggestions.

I'm going to recommend an Edge Router Lite. It's a fun learning experience. If you're already on that level, it's very straightforward.

Haven't messed around with Cisco anything myself yet, but that could also be a fantastic learning experience for ya.
 
PFSense, just sayin.

If you already have a vlan aware switch at the rack you can run it in a VM.
 
Currently using 3 juniper ex2200 12C switches on the rack, they may need to get swapped for something with higher port density eventually. I think I will be going with pfsene, for now I am going to fire up my firebox running pfsense. I may virtualize it down the road but for now physical seems like the easier option. I need to get a router in place...getting antsy to start building out the virtual environment starting with DC's and a vcenter server.
 
Would a single 512GB SSD be able to match this array from a VM perspective? It would definitely match it in bandwidth, I dont know about anything else?
 
Speed would be similar but you would loose redundancy and latency would be higher. You would be depending on a single device for reads and writes. As it stands now you have a dedicated write cache and read cache.

Zfs also has the added benefit of end to end crc.
 
I wasnt necessarily wanting to switch as I have really enjoyed the expericene. Just got to thinking about it now as I have it running...Got my pfsense router put in place. havent had time to build out my DC yet though
