Cheap performing 478 processor

If its not gonna be doing anything other than just sitting there, that celeron will work fine...

In file transfers, CPU doesn't do much
 
Celeron D's are 478pin right? So it should work in my Asus P4C800-E Deluxe?
 
Yes Celeron D's come in the 478 pin package. I use a Celeron D 315 right now for my websurfing/file server box and it's great.
 
You can pick up mobile P4's usually for under $20 on eBay. With a BSEL1 pin mod most will run at 2.4Ghz (12x200) and even overclock nicely too. My 1.8 would do 3Ghz on air.
 
lots of options... what type of motherboard?

Asus boards can run the CT-479 adapter and run a $30 Celeron M and get stellar performance at very minimal noise and power usage. I'd avoid P4-M's if you have a asus board, they tend to have issues... though I would recommend picking up a Pentium-M.

Other boards still have lots of options... P4-M's are cheap and overclock extremely well. (well, C1 cores do, the B0's max out between 2.4 and 3.1Ghz)

Don't forget Celeron D's, also, they are AWESOME chips and overclock upwards of 4Ghz with decent cooling and steppings
 
You'll be able to overclock the hell out of that Celeron D. Your other choice is a low end P4C. I am upgrading my server also and I chose the use a Celeron D 320.
 
I just ordered the Celeron D 325 processor linked above. Since I will be using this as a file server and it will be on 24/7 I do want stability out of it so I'm not sure if I'll OC it. But then again, if people are claiming it can OC well on stock cooling then I'm game. I have left over 2x512mb Corsair DDR400 sticks I'll be using. I don't expect the RAM to be a problem when OC'ing.
 
I received my Celeron D 325 and stuck her in my P4C800E Deluxe using my corsair 2x512mb DDR 400 sticks and the darn thing failed to boot to bios! In my past experiences it has generally been the ram which causes a PC not to boot. I have one HD, 2 CD-Roms, ATI 7000 and a Sound Blaster Live installed with a 400w PS. Any suggestions?
 
Don't suppose you can borrow a chip from anyone else to flash the latest BIOS onto your board? Oh, and obviously try booting with just the bare essentials first. I doubt it'll change anything in this case, but still...
 
I did have my P4 northwood in this mobo before and I had it OC'ed. I'm wondering if I need to clear CMOS.
 
You may also need a prescott ready bios, if you hadn't updated to one before, since that celeron d is a prescott core.
 
Indeed you are correct. I had to update my BIOS inorder for it to work. It's a good thing I had a CPU to put in to be able to update.

I just got my Celeron D 2.4 system up and running, and so far I'm at 3.6.
