Cheap Optical input 5.1 setup!?

Have a "cheap mans" 5.1 setup "upgrade". Currently have the Logitech X-540 5.1 that has the 3x 3.5mm from sound card (Asus DX 7.1 PCIe) to X-540 setup for surround. Works great but looking to hook up a PS3 for example and its optical out only. Logitech makes a converter but its only 2.1 to all speakers since its RCA to 3x 3.5mm. Looking to do Bluray etc. Ideas!?? Tried playing it THROUGH the sound card but no dice. I'm willing to change sound cards as well as its pretty old if it supports my current setup AND can do optical out "passthrough" I guess!? Thanks! :)
 
The X-540 has a front/rear/sub and then RCAs for the same. Which are you using for the sound card? Are you able to use the 3.5mm plugs for the sound card/speakers, and the RCA/Optical for the speakers/ps3?

Though may still end up with the 'only for 2.1' problem.

Otherwise maybe some cheap receiver/usb amp/dac??

You can use adapters for RCA to 3.5mm

So I take it you're trying to go PS3 -> Optical Output -> PC Soundcard -> Analog -> Speakers? This works, with proper soundcard, on the provision your PC is on.

Most newer soundcards have both Optical In/Out, but due to various reasons (money/profit) they don't always have the necessary decoders or software support to allow a 5.1 Dolby/DTS input to be decoded or even passed through. I know ASUS cards typically allow Optical In -> Decode Dolby/DTS -> Analog, but make sure you check before you commit your purchase should you go this route.

It may honestly be less hassle to get a cheap digital receiver and do a combination of SPDIF (from 360) and RCA (PC soundcard with each output converted via 2-to-1 cable), since this also removes the requirement your PC be powered to use the 360 audio.
 
PC was on the pass through would NOT work with my current card (Asus 7.1 DX). Any suggestions for a cheap digital receiver that is decent!?? Prefer Amazon. Thanks! :)
