Cheap, Fast RAID suggestions (Scratch Disk!)

*note: I already have a ZFS storage system that maxes out gigabit Ethernet.

I'm interested in suggestions for a 4-6 drive RAID 0 array that's FAST for content creation and manipulation - (think large Photoshop documents / HD editing in Premier, etc)

The drives do not need to be huge (2-4TB total storage would be fine), but i want to sustain 400+ Mbyte/sec or beyond.

I'm aware of SSD performance, but I'm curious instead about the max price/performance I can get out of spinning disks.

Obviously, this is for a scratch disk, thus no redundancy. I am well-aware of the risk involved.

So, any HDD suggestions?
 
I'd go for Hitachi 5400 or 7200rpm HDDs but I guess anything will do execept "Green" HDDs.
I guess Intel Matrix RAID might be of interest in this case.

hitachi drives work great in raid with no issues.

with the price of Mechcanils HD's i guess SSD arent large enough for the space needed :(

i would go with the largest drive with the least amount of platters on it for pure raw speed, i think 5-6 drives 400MB should be no problem.
 
I'm guessing that a bunch of single platter 1TB Hitachi drives would probably be your best bet.

I'm quite inclined to agree with you all. Now if only HDD prices would return to their pre-flood levels soon...

Single platter 1TB is pretty amazing... From looking at benchmarks, these drives are screaming fast, considering the cost. Guess high density on a disk really does translate to higher performance.

Yes it does for STR and this is the primary reason SATA disks from 2011 have much faster STRs then drives of 5 years ago that used what 250GB platters. Density does not directly help access times however for the same amount of data it will because of less head travel on the higher density disk. If I confused you think of short stroking and you will probably get what I am talking about.
