Ok, I have an old Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 80GB IDE HD that is giving the notorious Maxtor "polyphonic beeps" as the hard drive spindle is locking up and not moving. Basically, I'm SOL with the thing in terms of getting the data off with software methods and I have some very important files on the HD.
Seagate (who purchased Maxtor) has their data recovery team that says the basic home service will run between $300 - $1000 for 2-3 week delivery of the data on the drive on a DVD or some other data format. This would be fine time-wise, but can anyone offer any other data recovery option that doesn't cost an arm and a leg for getting simple files like jpg and word docs off of the drive??
Please post if you have a favorite data recovery company out there. TY!
Edit: HERE is the forum thread that starts back in 2002 and ends this month regarding Maxtor drives that beeped until they died. Yikes!
