Cheap candy painting.

My understanding of candy painting is that you spray down a base metalic color and then a translucent color ala clearcoat with pigment. Are there any colored clrearcoats available in a spray can or do I have to purchase automotive paint and use an airbrush for this? I know it would probably look better, but I dont wanna botch this up having never used an airbrush before, not am I trying to break the bank with high end auto paint. Yes I've googled, but no such luck on the cans.
 
I don't know much about airbrushes, but automotive spray paints use medium to high pressure air ( 4-6 bar average - 50-70 PSI / more or less - ) to create a thin & homogeneous haze of paint/clearcoat ... ) which makes application with airbrushes somewhat limited ( average air pressure = 2bar / 25 PSI - especially for clearcoats, that can't be dilluted too much or they'll drip )

I don't think I've seen candy coats spary cans, but, who knows, maybe you can find one :)

or else, try to make a friend in a bodywork shop :D
 
I didn't expect to find it labeled or intedned as a 'candy' spray, I was just hopingthere was something like that for other use or something. Hmm, mabey I should look into modeling paint. How well do yall think that may hold up?
 
actually you can get candy paint in spray cans. go to the model car isle at wal mart and look for the half size spray cans labeled candy whatever color. heh heh.
 
compressor + paint gun + basecoat + clearcoat with added pigment = win.

oh btw if you're a cheapass you can go to michaels craft store and they sell pigment which also works but it's not the best for your paint gun.
 
Mabey i won't be so lazy after all. I can get ahold of a compressor and paintgun easily. Just never have had used one, so I'll have to do a little research. Thanks guys.
 
A good candy paintjob consists of at least 6 layers of paint.
1st coat: Primer
2nd coat: Base coat of white, then wet sand.
3rd coat: Coat of white, then wet sand.
4th coat: Coat of color of your choice, then wet sand so the white starts to come through.
5th coat: Coat of color, a little less wetsanding.
6th coat: Another coat of color, if you don't like the look yet, or clearcoat if you do...

It is a pain in the ass to candy coat something, whether it be a simple hood or a whole car...

Just a fair bit of warning.
 
Thats the first time I've heard the process described as that. It seems everyone else in the world does primer, then metallic base coat (ie:silver, gold, ect), then a translucent clearcoat/color pigment mixture. Can someone else verify? Do I have this all wrong?
 
instead of doing a candy, if yer just going for a simple pearl I've found that the quick basecoat + clearcoat w/ added pigment works just fine.

It may be the incorrect way but the finish is alright and looks diff.
