changing resolution in xp

My monitor which was running at 1200x1600 just died and in the mean time I would like to use an old 17" monitor I have laying around. The problem is that the 17" one doesn't even come close to supporting that high of a resolution and the screen just goes black as soon as windows starts. I'm sure there's an easy way to set the resolution to something like 600x800 without actually loading windows.

Hold F8 when windows first starts to boot. You will then get a menu of boot choices and you should pink the one that vga mode in it (thats not exactly what it is but I can't remember exactly) and boot. It should come up in 800x600 or something like that and then you will be able to set the resolution you want. Then you can reboot and load your OS like normal
 
I'm not sure I remember VGA mode, but you can boot into Safe Mode. It'll boot at 800x600. Go into the settings, and select 800x600 again. sounds wierd, but that should fix it. If you still have trouble, go into safemode and uninstall your video card driver. Then you can boot normally, and re-install the driver.
