Changing Multiplier in A64

Hello everyone, Im new to OC'ing. I raised my voltage and FSB and was able to get my A64 3200+ to 2.25 from 2.00. From reading I know that the multiplier is locked so I was wondering how do I change it so I can push my OC a little higher. BTW my mobo is an ASUS K8V Deluxe
 
ok, so how are some of these people OC'ing there A64 getting such high numbers?

the a64 lets you lower the multiplier, but not raise it. :)
 
they are increasing there FSB.

also the multi is unlocked on the FX series. and as stated below you can lower the multi on an a64
 
since no one else bothered to give you an answer that was worth a shit, here we go...

first read this overclocking guide <-- it has a walkthrough of oc'ing terms and how to do it

now for some first-hand advice..

1. Watch your temps, you don't want to fry your chip. By increasing the voltage you are gonna raise the temps on your CPU.

2. See how high you can go on each voltage setting before increasing it. Try playing with the multiplier, FSB, and RAM ratios before going up in voltage.

The main things you are gonna be toying with are the FSB and the multiplier (for a CPU overclock). You dont have to keep the multiplier at it's highest setting, you can lower it and increase the FSB instead. Before any of us are going to be able to help you much you will have to list your system specs for us.

Another thing you will have to consider are RAM ratios. If you don't have RAM rated for a high speed, then you may have to set a ratio such as 5:4 or 5:3 to run the RAM at a slower speed than your CPU FSB.

I would give a better explanation but its late, and this is the best response so far, so we'll go from here.

ok, the first thing you should do if find the upper limit of your clock generator.
to do this, drop all the multipliers down a lot. set the ram to 1:2 or "ddr200", the cpu multi to like 6 or something, and the ht multiplier to 2 or 2.5.
then increase the htt (aka: fsb) speed until it's not stable anymore. remember about 5mhz below that number, cause that's the limit of your motherboard that you're gonna need to know.

after this, set the ram to 1:1 (ddr400) and adjust the voltage to like 2.8v (or more if you're comfortable with it) and the timings to something around 2.5-3-3-8 (these can be tweaked later for optimal performance) and then slowly increase the htt from stock until once again, it's not stable. then once again, remember the number 5mhz slower than this, cause it's about the limit of your ram.

now to find the cpu's limit. set the ram back down to a slow speed (1:2) and put the cpu's multi back to stock (10 in your case) and increase the voltage. if you have a stock cooler, i would hesitate to go above 1.65v.. maybe even 1.6 might be pushing it. if you have something better, 1.7 is acceptable, and water cooling.. go nuts.
now same thing as before, increase the htt until it becomes unstable. but this time, just slow the htt down 1mhz at a time until it's stable (prime95 is a good way to test this)

now that you know the limits to everything in your computer, mix and match htt speeds and multiplies/dividers until you find something that is near the maximum speed of both your ram and cpu.
after you've done this, set the ht multi back up to a number that would result in a final ht speed of less than 1000mhz (say your final fsb is 275mhz. the stock multi of 4 would be too high, cause it would be 275*4= 1100mhz, so you'd need to use 3)

now that you're done with this, try lowering the timings for the memory, cause i'll be willing to bet that you don't actually have the ram running at the maximum speed that you found earlier. while doing this, once again, check for stability.

after this... you're set. :D
