changing cpu's

so, im wanting to swap cpu's.. it's a p4 from 2.4 to a 3.0.. i was wondering if i could just swap them out without having to do anything..

can anyone shine some light on this issue..
 
Depends on the FSB and the core. Some older chipsets can't run the Prescott. Also, boards that are only capable of 533 or 400 FSB will pretty much cut the cpu speed in half if its an 800 FSB chip.

Yes, and you need to re-apply thermal paste and scrape the old stuff off the heatsink.
 
depends really, if you old CPU uses Socket 478 and the 3.0 uses socket 478 aswell then there shouldn't be problem, but if the 3.o uses socket 775 then you will need a new mobo.
 
hmm, not sure what FSB they both are.. but i tried putting in the 3.0 and nothing would boot up.. i guess they have different FSB's..
 
Look at the tops of the processors and give us the numbers on them. It should be stamped in there 3.0Ghz/512/800 (whatever) the last number is the FSB. Also give us the alpha numeric below that.

Yeah the first chip was a northwood 533. The chipset (maybe i850E?) could only do up to that FSB. You'll need a new motherboard most likely.

Post what CPU-Z says about your motherboard please.
 
getting a new mobo is completely out of the question.. so i will probably just stick with the 2.4 and return the 3.0..

its an old computer and wanted to fix it up a bit for someone, but it's my old computer that im giving away for free.. id rather not spend any more money, because the rig i built is expensive..
