This is kind of long winded, but any help would be appreciated.


Ok, So I just picked up a new Intel 3.0EGHz processor (478pin) the other day for my machine because when I'm working on my 3D stuff, the old 2.0GHz jst wasn't cutting the mustard - system was very choppy, and I could only have one window open... god forbid if I were to try running WinAmp at the same time. YIKES!

Anyway, after reading through the motherboard manual, just to make sure there wasn't any little "quirks" I had to do (ya, someone actually reads a manual.... crazy shit, eh?) I start it up, and on the bootup screen, it tells me that the "CPU has been changed or is unusable", and to go into the SoftMenu. So I do that. I check over all of the settings related to the CPU, go to save & exit, but the system hangs at that point EVERYTIME. I can reset, go in there, and not save the settings & exit - it won't hang there, but I'll get the same "CPU unusable" error when I boot next time.

This afternoon I took the processor back to where I bought it from, and they tested it out on one of their test systems, but it worked fine. They made the suggestion that possibly it's the motherboard that's on it's last legs, which would really piss me off, since I only bought it last summer (Abit IC7-G). If that is the case, I'm thinking of telling them to keep the CPU because I might as well upgrade the mobo and CPU as a whole.... afterall, the newer mobo is the only reason why I stayed with a 478 pin socket to begin with.


Any ideas?


BTW, before the 3.0GHz CPU, I was ruuning this setup successfully:
Intel 2.0GHZ
Abit IC7-G mobo
1gb of DDR RAM
Nvidia GeForce4 ti4200 gpu
CL SB Audigy2 Platinum
....and more stuff
 
Flash the BIOS with the newest version yet?

Prescotts have required BIOS flashes to work properly on older s478 mobos.

 
A. I totally agree with gwai lo about the BIOS upgrade.

1. What kind of power supply do you have?

2. Did you upgrade your heatsink/fan unit as well?
 
Thanks guys, the BIOS upgrade worked...... only now I'm getting an annoying, beeping alarm from the system warning me about the CPU heat levels.

It's not overclocked right now, and I've got a Volcano fan on the CPU, yet the PC Health monitor in the SoftMenu says the CPU is sitting at 90* for some reason. It shouldn't be running that hot.... the 2.0GHz CPU that I had before never ran above 75*..... so now I'm really confused.


BTW, I've got a 450W Antec PSU that came with the tower (Antec Performance II SX1045BII).
 
Probably a good idea to re-seat the heatsink. Clean and reapply thermo compound.
 
yeah, the old 2.0 should have never been above 50C. I would wager that your HSF isn't installed properly. This CPU should probably max around 65-70C.
 
good golly!! 2.0 at 75C and thats good? wow. Definitely get a new heatsink and fan. Prescotts are the hottest P4's right now, and I doubt an aged TT Volcano heatsink can adequately cool that thing.

err, this might seem a little stupid to ask.. but you mentioned Volcano fan... do you even have a heatsink on it? Sorry I had to ask, but even a prescott 3.0E shouldnt run 90C, let alone a 2.0 at 75C
 
Maybe I was on crack last night when I typed that. It does run a little warmer, but not that high I'm pretty sure, since I don't run the Volcano at 100% because it sounds like a jet engine... freakin loud abomination!, but ya, I'm pretty sure it was never that high - anyway, I'm looking at picking up a new Zahlman CPU fan and heatsink pretty soon though, because I've got the computer in my room now, and I like to sleep at night.

Anyway, just to answer the question, yes, there's a copper heat sink that somes with the Volcano.
 
the abit IC7-G sensors are wrong...
mine says it hits 80c but the real temp is like 50c
