CES 2012 Thread - Post new case news posts here

I'm interested in the V700. I will wait until the next Lian Li sale though. It will most likely be $200-220 day one.

I really like this:

In Win XFrame Limited Edition (Only 50 will be made)

Excellent post Necere, thank you very much! The V700 has my attention and I'm going to keep tabs on it. It's basically everything the A05N should've been! It also make me sad that there, so far, hasn't been a much needed update to the V600F. Why Lian Li...why! :(

I like the 550d design but I personally not keen on the silver USB part on top... What's wrong with sleek and black?

Lian Li disappointed me this year .

Come on Coolermaster wow me with case options. Cosmos II is just too big too heavy for my needs.

For the most part I agree, the only real new stuff Lian Li came out with are SFF cases which don't really interest me. I was hoping for something awe inspiring like a new addition to their TYR or Armorsuit series. The stuff from Corsair is pretty uninspiring too, we have enough mini-fridge looking cases out there! The Cosmos II, in itself, is pretty damn impressive though, I wouldn't buy it, but it's nice to see what Cooler Master has done with it.

No doubt Cosmos II case is awesome

I think it's safe to say the Cosmos II gets Best of Show. All the other case makers made "safe" design choices that will yeild strong sells at their price points.
The Cosmos II and Trooper are two great cases from CM is a short time span. Looks like CM is back, pre-ammo box looks.

Now if they release another ATCS in black on black aluminum, I would....well you know. :p

What happened to the murderBox MKII? The official site still says: @CES 2012.
Maybe they meant 3012? =D

It was there but apparently not even the Silverstone people could touch it. Can't touch it, see it, or photograph it....

They've "secreted" themselves right out of existance....and missed out on major free advertising.

CES is far from free.

How many tens of thousands? I know it's very pricey, that's why Caselabs passed on displaying at CES this year. Only big boys apply, companies that sell large volume via retail that is.

Depends on what you want. I can't even imagine what Samsung's booth costs. Just the booth space alone is probably in the hundreds of thousands or millions for them.

But there are costs beyond that.

For example:
1 - Booth space on show floor is expensive, but you can also get a hotel suite (though many hotels won't let you show off hardware in the rooms anymore) or a ballroom. Corsair was in a ballroom at the Venetian convention center - it worked out very nicely for us. Imagine this is in the tens of thousands alone.

2 - The display hardware. The stands, booth draperies, printings, posters, banners, lights, all the display stuff - this can be in the thousands to hundreds of thousands depending on what you want.

3 - The personnel - flying in product managers, sales people, executives, costs money just for the flight, plus hotel rooms per night, plus their food and cab fare each day. Imagine the ballpark costs for this being around $300-$500 per day per person, minimum.

4 - The partnership stuff - meeting suppliers and customers for dinners, taking them out for a couple of drinks at lunch, just general basic relationship building. This is another few thousand for the week.

5 - A party/event - Corsair usually throws a party one of the nights, this time it was in cooperation with a review website and some other hardware vendors. This allowed us to split the costs. But it's still not cheap.

6 - The costs of all the hardware you ship there plus the costs of shipping. Imagine you stack two to five giant crates (roughly 5' x 5' x 5') with hardware. Each of them costs a few thousand to transport to Vegas by truck - let alone by air if you're late with something.

7 - The cost of the time of all your employees preparing systems, displays, and materials for CES for weeks beforehand. Time isn't free. Depending on which employees you're using and what they're doing, this adds up quickly. Sometimes you can reduce this cost by having a travel coordinator book airfare for people, but back in the day we used to book our own flights, which ate up a surprising amount of time when you need to coordinate it with everyone.

8 - Opportunity cost - every single person or resource that's at CES can't be anywhere else, doing their daily job. Which means I got back to work on Wednesday night (was only there for two days) with 430 emails in my inbox, and another 800 in my CC folder. (I separate "To:" emails from "CC:" emails to keep my sanity in order - I'm the PM for three large product lines). But what COULD I have been doing in that two days? Maybe requesting some new manuals? Putting together new color schemes for a 600T in pink and green? Spec'ing out our 2013 Tungstanium Plus PSU line's cable lengths and connector counts and spacing?

At the end of the day, you have to ask "Is CES worth it?" and I think this year, for me, it was. I got to launch two new cases, answer questions about PSUs and cooling, and watch our SSD guy carefully and elegantly arrange very expensive drives all day that he tried to convince people were mechanical samples so they wouldn't "walk off" from the booth.

This was my 6th CES for Corsair. I missed last year because my wife had a baby right around this time. Corsair didn't have as much presence when we started - it was just memory and flash drives, for the most part. Now we have a lot more product lines:
-Memory
-Flash drives
-SSDs
-Keyboards/Mice
-Gaming Audio Peripherals
-Cases
-PSUs
-Coolers
-Corsair Link

So for us, it's an expensive show, well into the six figures I'm sure by the time it's all said and done. But when almost every review site sends a couple guys to come by and see the new stuff, and when all your suppliers and vendors are in one place, it's too good an opportunity to pass up.

But I will say this - Vegas loses its luster quite quickly when you've been on the show floor all day. It's just not as fun a town as I remember it being when I was younger. Now, I work from 8:30 to 6 on the floor, and from 7-10 you're out with reviewers or partners. By 10:30, the last thing I felt like doing was slamming shots and gambling or going out to party with the younger guys. I guess I'm getting old.

CM = Great job on the new cosmos case
LL = really mostly ugly and SFF not really a deal breaker just not a fan as of right now.
SS = wow on the TJ04 good ideas went into that case and at the price break should be a great case
MSi = Shit really the crazy designed plastic case that cost too much are just not whats cool even for gamers
TT = read above statement for MSi
Corsair = All the case are solid might not be awe inspiring but the designs work and do it well.
Fractal = No new case really????
NZXT = Has came a long way and they are only getting better

Just my opinions on cases that I have only seen in pictures.

The hotel suites were great because that's were most of the secret and high-end cases were displayed.
The 800D was shown for the first time in a hotel room. I think rooms are better for the higher end products, since the environment is more controlled.

New stuff eh? Tungstansium? As in 95%+ Efficiency?
Looking forward to the second version of keyboards and cases.
If you guys can make a m-ATX case 15" tall or less(important), with the cooling potential of 2x120s in the front and top, and the silencing of the 550D count me in.
Basically I'm asking for a shorter 550D(no door) with one "stealth" 5.25 drive bay, an optional slot loading DVD drive adapter, 5 PCI slots and the cooling I stated above to fit two 240mm rads.
The Lian Li PC-A04, V600/V700 and V354 are a great examples of what I'm thinking about. Just take the bext from these cases and give the Corsair treatment.

But I will say this - Vegas loses its luster quite quickly when you've been on the show floor all day. It's just not as fun a town as I remember it being when I was younger. That tends to happen when work is required in a fun city. You want to leave more than stay.
I wouldn't go out either, I'll just use that time to plan a future trip back after plotting where all the good spots are located.

So total cost can be from $250K into the millions. The big players like Samsung look forward to that moment, they will paid any price to show off their new tech.

I agree with the most of your comment, but the Corsair 550D and Lian Li V700 are very cool designs also.
There's also offical word from CES the Silverstone is releasing a RV04 case. I hope it's an improvement on the RV01 full-tower rather than another mid-tower.

haha I was actually hoping to see a smaller / less plasticy Raven case.

I accidentally snapped the top cover on my uncle's RV03 again. SS needs to address that in the RV04 Seriously, no easy to bind and snap 4 clip plastic top cover.

Be interesting if Corsair made something similar to the Raven to compete in that "higher price point badass" case category :)

Here are some name ideas!

- Cutlass
- Keelhaul
- Blackbeard
- Admiral
- Pesoiden
- Maelstrom
- Buccanear
- "Booty"
- "Poopdeck"
- "Seamen" ;)

I think a compact FT02 would be a cool case. Not the trash can look of the FT03.

Corsair Poopdeck Series 850D, coming right up.

Also, the Booty Series 650B has TWICE the room for cable routing of any other case! You can fit some serious junk in that trunk!

Oh Redbeard, you amuse me :)

Oh by the way, if you want me to help out any way on brainstorming ideas on a future Maelstrom case from Corsair, I am totally up for that. I will do it for free too! :D

What College path does one have to take to be able to get a Job designing case's? Just Engineering? Been a huge interest for me in my life. But not sure exactly what is needed.

I would think engineering would be the path to go also, with good design and drafting skills.
Maya/3D Max and other software knowledge would be great. Redbeard would be an excellent source for a career path.

Mechanical Engineering would be your best bet.

I took a bit of a different route - I started in the lab working on memory testing and over the last 7+ years I've just clawed my way up the ladder a bit by making my opinions loud, respectful, and largely useful. So now when I say something like "That piece is ugly and needs to be changed from grey to gunmetal" or "Those headphones are uncomfortable we should fix the memory foam to be less rigid" or whatever, stuff happens.

For cases at Corsair, it's a pretty much a team effort. I identify a market, and list down some preliminary specs. Then a couple of our engineers and I get in a room and brainstorm a bit, then we build up a model (sometimes out of cardboard and tape and old computer parts) for proof of concept. Simultaneously, our engineer is doing a CAD drawing of it, then when we're pretty happy, the design goes to 3D modeling stages and exterior design groups, where we put different types of look and feel (the original 600T had 9 design concepts that were whittled down to 2 and then finally the one we picked, which varied a bit from the original concept), and then to prototype manufacturing and model making (they make a model out of foam or MDF and paint it up nicely for size/dimensional stuff). After that we see a hand-built prototype or two, then we go into tooling stages.

This process can take over a year. So an idea I have today might not be ready until March of 2013, for example. Or it could take only a few months if it's relatively simple and it's like "What if we took the 600T, painted it black and gold, and replaced the window with a painting of Burt Reynolds for the 'Bandit' edition?"

Note - 'Bandit' Edition was shot down by management. Licensing issues. :(

Thanks Alot Redbeard! Its nice to know the process that takes place just for one product and how it goes about. And its a shame the bandit was shot down... The black and gold theme would be nice. Minus Burt Reynolds... haha.

One question. When's Corsair making an Aluminium case? :p

Thanks again!!

Talk about out of body experiences, I feel like I just went through a tour of the Corsair R&D department. :p

I love this kind of stuff!

Anyone think it would be awesome of Corsair made a Youtube show about inside look at cases and R&D? Of course, hiding all the sekrit things, and just revealing the talent and hard work that goes into everything! Maybe some fabrication vids! I am sure the hardcore fans would sign on to watch them, as I HOPE them like myself, really appreciate everything Corsair does!

The NZXT looks the most appealing so far, but it needs more than a fancy window design. Need to see more i.e. Lian Li and Silverstone.
I'm looking for game changers i.e. Cosmos II. The MSI, Thermaltake and Corsair cases are more of the same.

The only thing the cosmos 2 changes is my belief that Cooler Master could not possibly make something more hideous than the cosmos 1! LOL j/k!

Its a shame they didn't get (or want?) any media coverage.
