Cell Factor - Liquid/Cloth

Hey,
I recently got a new gaming computer:

M2N SLi-Duluxe Motherboard (DDR2, Socket AM2)
AMD Athlon64 4200+ X2 Dual Core (Socket AM2)
2Gb Kingston RAM (DDR2)
Xpert Vision nVidia 7900GT 512MB (PCI-E)
320Gb Barracuda Hard Disk (7200RPM, 16Mb Cache)
DVD Re-Wr Drive
19" TFT Monitor
Windows XP Professional
550W PSU

Now, I got Cell Factor running without having to have a PPU card. Runs pretty well actually, no major slow-down. 20 - 60 fps...

I was wondering, is there a way to get the cloth/liquid effects without having the PPU? Like, I know, I know.. It'd be an incredible strain on my CPU but I just wanted to know what they're like, in the flesh. I was looking through the .dll files in the game's dir and no luck.

Please help.. I wanna see the liquid/cloth effects in action before I even think about investing into a PPU in the future.

Oh yea, also. You guys know the Novedex Rocket thingy? Well, I downloaded it and it runs way, way! too fast for my PC.. The framerate on the openning menu is like 2000fps, and I can't click on anything it's so fast.

Is there anyway to like, lower my fps? (Without under-clocking)

Vsync will lower your FPS to match the refresh rate on your moniter, turn that on in the drivers
 
No, you can't.
Thats the point of having a PhysX card.
Any GPU or CPU can handle the boxes falling apart, but the cloth and liquid pwns them.

Cloth and liquid aren't really any different than boxes. If you look at any "fluid" simulation from physx, it looks more like cottage cheese than a proper liquid, due to how large in size and few in number the particles(boxes/spheres) are that make up the fluid. Cottage cheese avalanche, cottage cheese water, cottage cheese smoke+fire, etc, etc. Cloth is essentially just a bunch of boxes attached together to form a mesh, so there's nothing really special there either.

Maybe, but the CPU still cannot handle them.
 
At least not in CF (which uses Novodex, which is made by Ageia, who are trying to sell PPUs - come to your own conclusions).

I think it's more different then boxes.
Fluid in PPU is a simplefied simulation what is possible with this generation.
It's more a few basic fluid proscesing varables are used at a low detail to simulate fluids.
Keep in mind that it is in game where more PhysX features share the PPU.
So its the first step to more realistic fluid.
Voodoo1 wasn't that realistic to. it was
Physics is more about how itm behaves then how it looks.
PPU and GPU become more powerfull so the Physics scale and detail can be cranked up in time.

There are various software-physics demos that do cloth. The reason that CF's versions of fluid/cloth don't work (at all) obviously have to do with something in the code being specifically written for physx cards, not due to any kind of performance-related inability on part of the CPU as was being implied.

Assuming CPUs can't do the cloth and fluid very well, it would be in ageia's best interest to have their demos run fluid+cloth emulated in software, as to show how terrible the performance is without a physx card.
 
I thought they enable it in R36.
Because the blind benchin from "Look the CPU can do all that to with good FPS". Forgeting Cloth and fluids are of. In software mode.
Some how you can enable Cloth and fluids in Software mode.
Must stand somewhere in this main thread or CF forum.
I have PPU so I only use Hardware acceleration.

No, it's really not. It's just a bunch of objects, and a set of physical laws governing their motion. There's extra computation required for the forces binding them together, but there's no angular velocity, torque etc. on the individual elements like there is for a rigid body.

The only reason liquid and cloth are computationally intensive is the sheer number of elements required to pull it off. If your CPU can do 1000 boxes, it can most likely do 1000 fluid particles.
