I was wondering if anyone knows what makes cdrom drives whined up really high and then back down kind of over and over.... also when transfering data it kinds of goes and then pauses and the spins back up and continues transfering data and then slows down and does the same pattern...
Its a cheapo 56X generic drive someone gave me and I was just wondering.... thanks...

It's probably the fact that it's a cheapo one. The stopping and spinning back up is when it loses it's place and stops and goes looking for it again.

Winding up and down is either a bad disk, bad drive, or just a crappy drive :). If it's doing that it can't find whatever it is it's lookign for.

yeah I figured as much I thought maybe someone might no an easy fix or something if I had a setting wrong in windows or maybe fix it with some wire, chewing gum, and a match...

LOL...

I get that problem sometimes with my lite-on, when it's a cd that's in really rough shape.
