Hey everyone i needed a quick hand here i know it's a bit of a noobie question but i just finished building a computer and i have the dvd burner in there, along with the hard drive and i was not sure which ide slots or jumper settings are best, i currently have the HD jumpers set on "master" and it's on it's own ide cable connecting to slot 1, and i have the cd-rom on the ide slot 2 set on slave, and the boot up takes a long time to run and it asks me to boot from cd multiple times, i also changed the boot order to start with the hard drive and it's still taking long, windows is fully installed and it will go into windows just takes a good 5 or 6 minutes, please help me out im a noobie

You want the CD-ROM set to master. It's on a different channel. Each channel has a master and a slave. I'm not sure that's what's causing the booting delays, though.

I am using Windows XP pro

 That's a hell of a machine for a noobie to be building

Try this. It actually might help:

IDE0: Master: Hard Drive
Slave: nothing
IDE1: Master: DVD-RW
Slave: nothing

Having that set up wrong can make quite a difference.

However, where is your boot process hanging at? Is there any particular part of boot up that is taking a long time? Like any particular screen that it gets stuck on?

IDE0: Master: Hard Drive
Slave: nothing
IDE1: Master: DVD-RW
Slave: nothing

That was my original set up, and the boot is hanging around "boot from cd" it states on the screen "boot from cd" , then a few mins later it goes to "press key to boot from cd" it also says "bios is not installed" for a quick second somewhere during the boot process

Is there a CD in the drive?

Also, what Motherboard are you using? Does it have a second set of IDE RAID ports on it? If so disable those in the BIOS. Also try unhooking the DVDRW completely and see if the issue is still there.

it seems to be taking a min or two when it first detects everything thats on the IDE ports, i tried disconnecting the cd rom completely and it still is going pretty slow, also i don't believe this mb has extra raid ports, i also look around bios for anything i could change, it still shows "bios not enabled"

here is the entire boot process
1 at the main mother board screen detecting IDE ports, seems to take a min or two even after completely un plugging the cd-rom, i have IDE
IDE channel 0 master : "My hard drive"
IDE channel 0 slave : NONE
IDE channel 1 master : NONE <--- The cd rom here when i have it connected
IDE Channel 1 slave : NONE
IDE channel 2 master : NONE
IDE channel 3 master, : NONE
the only thing being detected is the harddisk on IDE channel 0 Master,

Then it goes to a screen where it says "detecting" for a quick second and goes to "Not devise detected" and "BIOS Not Installed" then it hops right to the verifying DMI pool data.... and waits there for a good minute, which then it says "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"

I currently have the boot order set to "hard disk" , "CD-ROM", "Floppy"

-edit
I just hooked the cdrom back up and tried booting normally with the Win xp cd in the computer, it went to Verifying DMI pool, hung for about 50 seconds, then came up with the msg " "Boot from CD", (waits about 30 to 40 seconds), then says "Press any key to boot from cd", and without me touching any keys, it went right to the windows loading screen, but then the computer just went black and stopped loading windows.

So i tried booting without the xp cd in and it comes up w/ the same 3 messages, hangs at "verifying DMI pool data"... a little longer, then says "Boot from cd:" Then says DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSTERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" so i put in the windows XP cd and hit enter, then it goes to a blank screen with just "Boot From CD :" listed there, hangs at that screen for about 40 seconds, and then goes into the windows loading screen, and then goes black and stops loading
im currently re formatting it and starting it over from scratch because it was originally working "slowly" but working with this current setup and i want to get back to that

*** Right now the HD jumper is set to Master, what should the cd-rom be set on, master as well, or like secondary master if that's available"

They should both be set to master. Also, in the BIOS, I would disable whatever ide channels you are not using. For example, disable IDE0 secondary, IDE1 secondary, and completely disable the UDE 2 and 3 which are probably trying to search for a raid array every time youstart the computer. I know on my computer, with the raid channels enabled, it takes forever for the thing to start up. But I am using them so I have no choice.

Thank you i'll try all of that, i have a bit of a problem im not sure if i missplaced my manual for the cdrom or it just didn't come with one, but i can't find any info on what the jump locations are, i checked all over the actual cdrom because i thought they are usually ingraved on there or something like that but i can't find it anywhere, does anyone know where i could find out what the correct jumper locations are for ASUS 16X, Dual Layer DVD±R/RW Drive, Beige, Model DRW-1608P, Retail would be

If it was retail it should have come with one.

I looked on the Newegg website tha tthe pictures and there is a manual shown, but Asus does not have one for download. And the picture of the back of the drive shows no etchings. Thats not very nice.

Not sure if this will help. I have a Sony and a Liteon drive in front of me and both of them are like this:

M S C
A L S
. . .
. . .

im going to do what i can to find the manual but if i don't should i just try like every location?, if so how would i know which is right when it is?
right now it's showing as
IDE channel 1 master : (cdrom here)

Also with the way i have things set up right now, it will not boot up into windows unless i have the actual xp cd in there and i have the boot priority on the HD with xp fully installed

You are correct on how to know when it is right. It sounds like there might be some other issues with your system though. I would get the DVDRW installed correctly and then reinstall windows and see if that works. If you still have the issues at that point I would probablt flash your BIOS to the latest version and the reset the CMOS.

what do you mean im correct on knowing when it's right??
IDE channel 0 master : "WDC wd800jb-00jja0 05.01c05"
IDE channel 0 slave : NONE
IDE channel 1 master : "ASUS DRW-1608p 1.17"
IDE Channel 1 slave : NONE
IDE channel 2 master : NONE
IDE channel 3 master, : NONE

This is what im looking at right now with my ide ports, but after it shows that list, it goes to the next page says really fast "detecting devices" BIOS IS NOT INSTALLED, then it goes to the verifying DMI pool data, and starts booting form the cd, now if i don't have the windows XP CD, INSIDE the cdrom, it tells me "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER", which i don't think it should be because i do have the hard drive on first boot priority + i have windows fully installed w/ everything on the mother board cd installed, but when i pop the xp cd in and hit enter it goes right to windows w/ no problem.... does this have to do with the jumpers?

-edit, right now the Hard drive is set on Master with it's jumpers, and the CD-rom is on what it was defaulted which was all the way to the right when i bought it

That is what your boot up should look like.

You were right about what the IDE listing should look like. Have you tried disabling the IDE 2 and 3 in the BIOS? That might help, but it sounds like something else since the HD is not booting at all. How long is it taking to get the boot from Cd screen up?

i went and tried to disable the other ide ports but theres no "disable" option that i found was just puttig it on manual and auto and such, should i change the ones im not going to use to manual?, and when i boot it with the cd in there and everything it boots at a pretty normal speed, no extreme delays

Hmmm. Try setting all the non-used ports to maual and then if there is a disable, none or off option use that. The two used ones can be left on auto. I would go ahead with the reformat and see if it makes any difference.

Let me make sure I have this right:

The computer is only slow when booting off of the hard drive. When booting off of the CD for windows installation, everything is fine.

When you try to boot off of the hard drive it says bad boot disk or whatever.

If you are in a position to reformat without any issues, I would just do a complete format and reinstall. Delete you partitions, do a full format (Not quick) and then reinstall.

i did the full reformat before and now the only time it feels like it's hanging a bit is when it's loading up the ide ports, im going to test that out with them disabled, i'll let you know how that goes something came up though i may not be back till later tonight so i'll get you updated asap

alright i tried running a boot with none of the ide slots enabled besides the two i was using and i still go the "disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter", then i tried unplugging the cd rom and starting and it's still not going into windows with the harddrive, it just brings up "disk boot failure" again, im not really sure what to do at this point i know i installed windows the right way, and i have the hard drive set on master, what do i do?

ok i figured it out, when u have the hd on it's own ide cable u don't need the jumper in at all, and it's working fine, but now when i install the vid card drivers the comp doesn't boot past the windows loading screen, i tried installing the drivers off the cd, then off the web site when that didn't work, the comp just stopped booting and sits at a black screen after the windows loading screen

What video card? Will it boot into safe mode?

yes i took care of it i forgot that had hooked up both of the cables for monitor "it's an lcd" and it was conflicting with the inputs
