I was in Big Lots tonight, looking at their cheap electronics stuff (three 6' USB cables for $8 vs. $25 for one anywhere else) when this caught my eye:

Am I the only one that thinks this is prime casemod material? I especially like the pop-up top for easy access to components. I'm thinking this might be just the thing for my grandmother that wants a computer but doesn't want some big ugly box in her living room.
 
Lots of potential in there. Read outs where it currently has that crappy VFD for the station, maybe you could do something like fan control or something creative with the knobs. I don't know about the top for easy access as it doesn't look like it opens that wide but it's still a possibility. My only concern is it's plastic and looks kinda flimsy but if you think you can work on it go for it.
 
To be honest, I think it would be wiser to take that as inspiration rather than use the box itself. It's a beautiful concept. You might also enjoy Jeffrey Stephenson's Decomatic HTPC that is not only the same style, but made of wood.

I would consider buying that thing and stripping off the chrome grills to reuse. A couple of Griffin Powermates instead of the knobs. Mount it all into a wood frame. Hmmm...
