What can I use to do this? Taping/cutting out the design I want is easy enough, but what can I use to actually etch the plexi-glass that I might have sitting around at home? I was thinking maybe model glue?(As it works by dissolving a bit of the plastic, and if used in a thin layer, should give a similar appearance to an actual etching). If not, what might work better?

I don't know what kind of house you live in, but I don't consider that a household item :p I could get my hands on HCl easily enough, but the problem is it would soak/eat right through any tape I use and I wouldn't get defined edges.

Are a screwdriver and some elbow grease considered home item thingys? It might not turn out nice but atleast ill give you props. =)

PICS!!!!!!!!

a buddy of mine did a pretty sweet job on his. he used made a template of what he wanted first, taped it all off really really nicely, then used either 400 or 600 grit sandpaper on his to give it that etched look. it came out very nice IMHO.
