Hi guys, im a first time poster but ive been checking out your forums for a some time now, and i wanted to ask a question... not sure if this is where it belongs tho...

I wanted to build my own rig from scratch but there wasnt enuff space on the CC to order the parts offa NewEgg so i had to get me a Dell 4550 desktop. yes, yes i know... anyways, i tried my best to add good performace in the build a system thing so i could play games on it, so my specs look like this:

P4 @ 2.52 gigs
512 RAM
ATI Radeon 9700
60 gig hdd 7200 rpm

might not look like much, but its good for gaming so far... anyways, i hate the way the cases look so i was wondering if it was possible to take apart the computer and move everything into a cool looking case (like are there any parts that wont come off it, etc.)? and also, if it is possible, what cases do you guys recommend?

sorry if this question sounds too noobish, but i just need to know!

dell uses some what a smaller mid tower. but yes you can take everything out and put it into a "standard atx mid tower"

i thought that dell uses a different powersupply. my friend recently bought a dell:
2.6Ghz P4
512mb pc3200
5200 ultra
120gig HD

the power supply is dell's own type i guess cuz it wont work with anything other than whats in that case.

i know that....but this means he'll have to buy another PSU...you have a brain, thinking isnt overrated

why the hell would he need to get a new psu, if he is only changing the case? is the case itself going to draw more power or something. all he is asking is if he can take verything out of the dell case, and move it into another case, and the answer is..

probably yes, you may have to do a little work to make sure the standoffs are maching up but it sould be doable.

as for a case, it depends alot on what you want, Im a big fan of IN-WIN towers but they are damn heavy (but you can punch and kick the shit out of them when your pissed) also antec has some nice cases for good $, Im likeing my lanboy, but its up to what you want your case to look like, and dont be afraid to paint, or mod b4 you put your things in.

you can also mod your dell case into something that doesnt suck but that may take more work.

good luck and happy modding

hmmm buying another psu why?

you can use the same one. DER!

apparently both of you guys dont read too well. the thing i even said in the first post was that if he has one of the proprietary dell PSU's then hed have to buy a new PSU because it might not fit in a different case(at least thats some of the problems ive run into in the past). i cant believe even you guys skipped over that part. plz read posts more carefully before responding.

Good case choice my friend just got that exact same case. We put his comp toeghter with ease and there is plenty of room in the case. You will love the case :)

assuming that the PSU wont fit all he will have to do is drill new holes for the screws...im sure he can manage that.

I think the case itself is ugly. But I have worked with the xdreamer1s and they are great for wire management.

DirtyApe: at no point did you say "it may not fit" all you said, is, you need to get a new psu, dell is proprietary, and use your brain and think.

if the psu doenst fit, make it fit, I have been informed that dell has moved to standard PSUs but im not sure if everything is standard, or if this is just something in the works, but thats what i hear from my people at antec... but i wouldnt go out and swap the psu just yet incase it hasnt happend yet,

if the psu is too small, get some metal, cut it to size and bolt it into your case, and then mount the psu behind that, boom your done, if the holes dont line up drill new holes, it shoudnt be that big a deal just like when you move your mobo, it should fit but it may take a little work to get everything the way you want it / it should be.

good luck and happy modding

quote from offical dell press release April 2002:

It is recommended that only Dell power supplies be used with Dell systems as it protects the efforts of Dell engineers to meet electrical, regulatory, environmental and safety concerns.

and there list of modifcations from ATX:
* Changing the power connector by adding additional 3.3V lines to handle higher current loads as system demands increased
* Modifying the motherboard dimensions to allow for the most efficient way for service and support personnel to remove and replace a faulty board
* Changing the orientation of the memory modules, processor socket, and other high temperature components by 90 degrees to allow for better front to back airflow
* Modifying the cooling solutions to accommodate a rear chassis fan to pull air across the processor versus the standard ATX specification that had air pulled through the power supply

however, i have very recently used a dell powersupply to power a MSI motherboard. So i can say that the electrical specs are the same. But if you think the conflict is in screw location, you are mistaken, as they have not changed the ATX PSU rear hole template.

No-one has said it yet, and I'm not really surprised, but remember that moving it all to a new case will void the warranty that you are paying for on the Dell. Just a thought since you are paying for it and all...

sorry for the misunderstanding...but what i was saying was that if he has the good ol proprietary dell PSU then he might have to buy another PSU because it most likely wont fit in the new case...and im sorry for the snotty remarks also(i wasnt in a particularly good mood) hopefully this will clear up what i was trying to say earlier. :D
