Case mod idea from a newb - Feedback requested

I have never actually done a case mod project, but had this really weird idea regarding air flow. I built my current computer using a premodded case and enjoyed it a lot. I went out and picked up the MaximumPC Extreme PC Mods book and got an idea.

I want to put this:

Seeing as how the hole is already there, it would be a matter of removing the acrylic window and creating some sort of shroud between the Honeywell fan and the case itself. It would basically be a massive exhaust fan. As an addition, I was thinking of creating a second shroud or funnel so that the larger fan would interact with the CPU fan to suck the hot air out the side of the case. This would allow any other case fans to provide general cooling independet of the CPU as the air would circulate around the funnel inside. Depending on the material used for the funnel, it could be laced with LEDs or cathodes to provide some nice color.

Unfortunately I have no clue the CFM of the Honeywell fan although I could probably track it down. I would want the interaction between the CPU fan the large case fan to cause any problems. The power could be run on some sort of switch so that it turns on when the power button is pushed.

Any thoughts?

Damn! Those fans would probably starting sucking components off the mobo!

Anyway, it's just a redical idea I had. I just read a few reviews that this 8" fan is pretty loud so I might try to find another model. What I liked about this one is that the base is mounted on the sides of the fan as opposed to the back. I could either remove the base and tap into the same mounts, or keep the base and figure out some way to connect the fan to the case so the air is sucked straight out the side.

Lol i didn't think about that. Think about it sucking your 600$ ati x800xt right out the case lol. :eek:

Anyway lol Wiring the fan would not be a prob its mounting it yes. The best way is to get the fan you want then go from there. Finding out the best way to go about things.
 
maybe thats why there are screw holes in the slots in the case, and corresponding slits in the cards :p

Perhaps get a case that doesn't cost so much and cut the whole to size. Then plexiglass in place. Thats what I'd do.

that honeywell fan(i've got one in my office) is ricockulously loud and vibrates more than your mothers 2-stroke-powered dildo.

all in all, a bad idea.
 
Cause switches havn't been invented yet. :rolleyes: Havn't yall ever done anything for show? Half our cases are that loud as it it.
 
Hah! Great stuff. Funny I see this now since I was having cooling problems since I installed my new power supply. I ordered a new CPU cooler online and while I was waiting I used that same Honeywell fan pointed at the open case to remove the heat. It worked, temps got around to 55C at the most, but it was L-O-U-D. Even on the lowest setting.

Some smartass at the virtual hideout galleries years ago integrated one of those cheap box Wal-Mart fans into the side panel of his case. I was amazed the system ran from the EMI coming hat exposed motor but I bet he got good airflow at gawdawful noise levels.
 
I've yet to hear of anyone having an EMI issue with PC's, after all plexi cases offer up no protection. I think it's an urban myth or only applies in extreme circumstances.

Most people with EMI issues dont know they have EMI issues, but that is a point for another conversation...

To provide my opinion which you are looking for:

Pros:
Moddest increase in air flow

Non-stock look

Pride in doing something different (even though it's not original)

Cons:
Moddest increase in air flow (though the fan will be great for open air movement, these fans have never been great at moving air when drawing from a "sealed" source of air or air source with great restriction.) It will waste a lot of time creating air turbulence with what air is around it and thus turbulence creates noise.

Non-stock look - a lot of work will need to be applied to make the fan look like it should be there, if done well can look nice, but most box fans/large fans on computer systems end up looking tackie to me.

Pride in doing something different, even though it's not original - this idea has been done before and as you are seeing a little bit, the modding comunity is not exactly impressed. The idea is not practical and computer based fans already do a great job at moving the air NEEDED... There is a point where 100% more air will net you unnoticeable differences in cooling capability... For instance, I would never freeze water by blowing 75 degree wind past it, no matter how much I push past it... Eventually you need to use a different means to cool it... A set of 120mm fans will already move more air than necessary, and give you sub 40db sound levels. It's not that the loudness is a factor, but why be loud to be loud. Loud computers from whirring fans are not impressive, a completely uncomparable subject to loud cars... Even loud cars are not all impressive sounding... It could sound like crap, but be loud=not impressive...


My point is that the idea, though not so bad, has a lot of bad capabilities... I would refrain from the idea, but you seem pretty pressed to do it, so jump right in... I hope you can pull it off well.... Just my 3 cents...
